Gravel paying $10 a carload has been ; inthe Gray Eagle mine at Spring . . ‘den, Placer county, says the Aubaorn rgue. The significance of this development will be appreciated: by all miners interested on the Forest Hill divide. For seven years the Gray Eagle Mining Compayy has been pluckily spending large sums of moneyin sinking a shaft 400 feet through the cement, and then when that failed »f making the expected discovery a still larger sum has been expended in running a tunnel in the face of which, 6,000 feet underground, the strike has finally been made which will turn back the golden stream. Beléw the Dardanelles mine there has been known to be seven miles of channel, undoubtedly rich, but so deeply buried that it has-balked the-efforts of many mining companies to find jt, The Gray Eagle diseovery locates this channel and at the Other comstr same time proves its value, panies will now be encouraged to go ahead to develop this channel, thus adding mate~ rially to the gold product of this county for years to come and providing work for many miners. There is every reason to believe the channel to be the same as that mined in the Breece & Wheeler and Mayflower, and it will repeat the phenomenal yield of those The Gray Eagle Company is a San moines, Francisco corporation, of which BW: Gray is the President and T. G, Durning Superintendent.’ 1No moreimportant mining news has ever been sent out of this section, as the success of the Gray Eagle means success in a corresponding manner to Placer county, This company has stuck pluckily at it, constantly drawing upon the pockets of the stockholders for assessments, and we rejoiee with them in their good fortune, THE DAILY TRANSCRIPES™ Summarized Mention of Minor Home Happenings, This-evening a delegation of members of Ponemah Council, Degree of Pocahontas of the Imp’d O. R. M., will go from this city to Grass Valley to pay a fraternal visit to Ceanotha Council of that place. There was a heavy white frost this morning that somewhat effected tender vegetables and other delicate plants that were not protected by some sort of covering. The dust has been very effectually laid for awhile, but some of our old inhabitants say we will have a spell of clear weather for some time now, and that the dust will fly again before we get much more rain. : + e@eDied'at Downieville. “J.T. Gaffney died at Downieville last TOTAL ABSTINENCE IMPOSSIBLE, But Here Is Something Just as . Good. In spite of all that has been said and written by advocates of total abstinence it is indisputable that modern methods of work and living make the occasional and even. frequent use of. gentle stimulan highly beneficial if not Soactalety Sees. sary to the great majority of men—especially those engaged in business and mental pursuits. Lack of exercise and the excessive consunmiption of nerve force and vital energy consumed by the brain breeds sluggishness of the digestive system which re acts on the brain. A corrective stimulant is needed. The curse of alcoholic and vinous liquors is that they over-stimulate and create a morbid appetite for more. Peruvian Bitters, though composed largely of eld California Brandy, have no such effect. It permits the healthy, stimutating effect. of the brandy, but completely obliterates its tendency to create a morbid desire Peruvian Bitters is a — but powerful tonic that impels sluggish functions to normal action; expelling cold, fevers, malarial poisons and other disease germs; building up the weak and convalescent, and by promoting a regular and healthy appetite, perfect digestion, souidsleep, and steady nerves, tends to produce phveteal perféction, good cheer and increase of happiness.Mack & Co,, San Francisco, All dealers and druggists. = Bbuman THE FISH’S BALLOON. A Mystery That Scientists Have Not Yet Been Able to Solve. ‘ Naturalists long ago studied the composition of the gas contained in the swimming bladder of fishes and discoyered that it consists of the principal constituents of the air—namely, oxygen, nitrogen and carbonic acid. But these constituents are not mingled in theSfish’s3 balloon in the same proportions as they are in the atmosphere, and pesides; their proportions do not remain always the same in the fish. Sometimes the bladfer, contains hardly any oxygén; af others oxygen constitutes nine-tenths “of -the whole contents. ioe a si The variation: ip flie Quantity of oxygen is somewhat tpyéterions, and .naturalists have” offered several. different suggestions asto the cause of it. Some thigke thé fish may be able to control the tity of oxygen in its bladder by its own will Biot, a distinguished French naturalist, thought he had solved the problem by discovering that the proportion of oxygen was larger in fish that lived at great depths and smaller-in those that liyed near the surface of the sea. : But. quite recently néw observations made from the Prince of Monaco’s yacht, -Princess Alice, seem to prove that Biot was mistaken and that the deep dwelling fish carry no more oxygen in proportion than do those living in shallow water. Some of the fish whose swimming bladders were examined by the naturalists on the Princess Alice came from a depth of no Jess than a mile. They were compared with fish which seldom descend below 200 feet in depth and with others which prefer a depth of about 500 or 600 feet, and all had nearly the same proportion of oxygen to aid. them in swimming. The yariations mentioned above seem therefore to depend upon some other cause than the depth of the fish’s dwelling place.
