SSATURDAY.....Sept. 14, 1901 IN MOURNING. About the time the Transcript went to press last evening, a telegram was received from Baffalo, announcing the death of President McKinley, and the news was thus published. But the an nounce was prematare, the President ral. lied from the sinking spell and lingered! on until 2:15 o’clock (Eastern time) this morning, when he passed away. Toward the last he became so weak that it was necessary for his physicians to administer oxygen and powerful stim ulants to restore him to consciousnes and strength for the final parting with his wife. He asked for her and she sat at his side and held. bis hand. He consoled her and bade her goodbye Mrs. McKinley went through the heart rending scene with the same fortitude with which she stood the shock from the beginning of the tragedy which ended his life. In his last period o consciousness, which ended about 7:50 o’clock, the President started the words of the hymn, “Nearer, My God, To Thee,” and his last audible words were as taken down by Dr. Mann at the bedside, “Goodbye, all; goodbye; it is God’s way; His will be done.” Then his mind began to wander and soon he completely lost consciousness, and centinued in this state until death re leased him. The President’s life was prolonged for hours by the use of oxygen and finally he expressed a desire to be permitted to die. During the time h was conscious, between 6 and 7 o’clock he was permitted to bid farewell to the members of the Oabinet, who were assembled in a room on the floor below. They knew the end was near and the seene was a sad one as with tear-stained faces they ascended the stairway lead ing to the President’s room. Thei stay was brief and they withdrew with tears streaming down their faces and words of intense grief. At Nevada City the intelligence announcing the President’ death was received with profound sorrow and sad. ness on every hand. When the news came yesterday that he had rallied THE TRANSCRIPT DENT MALE BuFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 14.—At 2:15 o’clock this mornin President McKinley passed away, after lingering unconscious fsor everal hours: Thig forenoon the oath of office was administered to President Roosevelt at the Millburn house by Federal Judge John Hazel, : _ The Cabinet have decided to have a short prayer servic here to-morrow afternoon. The body will be taken to Washington by a special train, early Monday morning, accompanied by the Cabine and family, where the remains will lie in state. The State funeral will be held on Tuesday. On Wednesday the funeral train will go to Canton Interment will take place on Thursday. BuFFAo, Sept. 14.--The Exposition officials held special meeting early this morning and ordered the Exposi jon grounds closed until Monday. SAN-FRANCISCO, Sept. 14.--The various theatrical man agers held a meeting this morning and adopted a resolution somewhat and that there was a fightinggof sympathy out of respect to the late President. The theachance for life, the people took fresh courage and breathed a silent praye that the executive’s life might be spared, and the universal wish was fo his recovery. Business seemed to be} at a standstill for no one had any heart to go about his business, and the question asked by every individua upon meeting an acquaintance was, “How is the President? What is the latest news?” While there were frequent’ expressions of sympathy for the Presi dent, his family and. the Nation in general, there was likewise a deep sentiment and hatred toward anarchism and the assassin who carried out ite principles. These expressions were heard on every hand: “Hanging is too good for him.” “Anarchism must be suppressed and anarchists must be excluded from the country.” It is safe to say that had the people of this com munity their desire there would be very few anarchists allowed to remain in America. Throngs-of people gathered around the bulletin boards yesterday evening, eager to catch a glimpse of the latest news. When the premature aunounce ment of the President’s death was re ceived and posted, a quiet and solemn stillness settled upon the gatherings and later extended over the whole town. At midnight when the final and confirmed news of his death was received, most of our citizens had rc— tired, but the solemn tolling of the cburch and fire bells imparted to themil the sad intelligence that our mach beloved President had finally passed away. The City Trustees held a ‘special meeting last night at which they passed resolutions of respect and sympathy and recommended that the business houses be draped in mourning fo thirty days. To-day Nevada City is clothed in the habiliments of sorrow and with thousands of its sister cities threughout thesUnion joins in deep expressions of sorrow and sympathy in-tbhe great calamity. On the day of the funeral, it is the general feeling of the public that bus iness should be suspended and ar rangements should be made to that end It would also be exceedingly appro priate for the people of our town to hold memorial services on the day o the funeral, and this will probably b done. : : President McKinley is no more on earth. While we shall miss bis wiae ecunsel and unerring judgment in guiding the Ship of State so ekilifully as he bas done during the past six years, still bis memory will never die in the hearts of the American peop as long as our Republic sball endure The whole country mourns the loss o one of the wisest, ablest and most¥e that the United—_faithful Presidents States.ever had or ever will bave. ceo Burvraio Laces BEER on draught, « cents a glass, at Council Chamb W, J.
