WILLIAM McKINLEY
FOR VICE PRESIDENT,
GARRET A. HOBART
OF NEW JERSEY.
~WRAT 1670-1 MEANS.
The Truth About the Live Issue of the
Campaign.
The free and unlimited coinage of silver at 16 to 1; méans-that the Govern‘ment shall manufacture into coins ali
silver brought to-our mints, putting into a dollar sixteen times as much silver
by weight'as there is of gold in a ‘gold
dollar by weight, and shall return the
silver. coins ‘so manufactured to the
person presenting the silver for coinage.
Sixteen grains of silver. are today
worth in the market but little more
than one-half of what one grain of gold
is worth, or, to be exact, sixteen grains
of silve®are worth 23-100 of a grain of
gold.
A.silver dollar weighing. only sixteen
times as much: as a gold dollar would
thus be worth in commerical value only
53-100 as much asa gold dollar, or 53
cents, © ;
The silver dollars in circulation today, although containing only sixteen
times as‘mucth silver in: weight as. the
~ amount of gold. in a glod dollar, are
accepted in business transaction, as a
dolar, because the Government has itself paid them out for one dollar, and
is therefore morally and legally bound
to maintain them assuch. If, however,
the Government should merely manufacture the dollars, and return them
to the men whose bullion it. has thus
coined, the dollars would be paid out
by these men, and nobody would have
any way of finding the persons who
originally paid-them out, and compelling them to maintain their coins as
equal to the gold dollar. The Government. would not be responsible for
them. \
There would bé, therefore, only one
way: of getting peoplé,to accept such
silver dollars in busineds transactions,
and that would be to makéthem by law
a legal tender for one dolla, whether
they! were worth it or not. AR
That is a part of the plan of. the
Populist-Democrats. They propase
that the Government shall not only
manufacture the silver dollars freely
for everybody presenting silver, but
shall make them a full legal tender for
one dollar whether they are worth a
dollar or not, and thus: compel people
to take them.
Every effort to maintain the circulation of silver and gold coins of_ the
same name but of unequal value, in the
manner proposed by the advocates of
unlimited coinage, has for centuries
resulted in the disappeararice of the
coins containing the greater value in
metal. If we are to judge by our own
experience and that of other nations, an
attempt to coin silver dollars having
less value in metal than the gold dollar
has, would cause the gold to disappear,
and would leave to the United. States a
currency composed exclusively of -silver or its representative.

That Fusion.
The Democracy is quite confident
of throwing out enough baits to the
Populists to get that party vote. The
order of Cator is a heavy dose for the
unterrified, but rather than lose the }
Superior Judge it is believed the Democracy will concede the Senator and
Assemblyman to the Populists.

Barbara Killed Me,
Lonpon, Sept15.—The correspondent
at Palermo, Sicily, sends details of the
passing of senténces\in a. remarkable
case tried recently. Fotseveral years
a wealthy merchant named Spalla had
carried on a ligison with thrée, sisters
in his employ; ‘named Christine, \Fran+
cesa and Jeanne, meanwhile being’ @xceedingly brutal in the treatment of
+his wife. Last spring he deeided to
abseond to Tunis with the girls, but his
wife, learning of the plot, complained
to the parish priest. Thereupon Spalla
hired a man named Barbara, a brother
of the girls,to murder his wife. Barbara obtained access to the house, cut
the woman’s throat, and, believing she
was: dead, hastened from the scene.
The unfortunate woman, however lived
long enough to dip her finger in her]
own blood and write upon the the floor:
“Barbara killed me.” The murderer,
his sisters and the husband were arrested, and it was found necessary to
station a corps of gendarmerie around
the jail to prevent a lynching bee. On
the trial last month all five were convicted of conspiracy to murder, and the
two men have now been sentenced to
death and the the three girls to imprisonment for life,
