The Telegraph says of the clubs that will play ball Sunday afternoon at Watt Park: The Monarchs are~generally known asthe “Kids.” They have played us a club two seasons and know points about the game that were never thought. of by many older players. People of this town go to see them play every chance they get and root and yell themselves hoarse in their behalf. The Smiths contain many players who have had an experience of from four to ten years on the diamond and are older in years then. the Monarchs. They have played some close games this season and are prepared now to show that they are worthy foemen of the Monarchs. —_—~-+-<6eARE EXTRACTING RICH ORE. Mining Operatio:s in Willow Valley Are Giving Good Prospects. At the Montana mine in Willow Valley some rich ore is being extracted. ‘The incline is down 3831 feet. Several ‘parties are talking of buying this mine. It has produced, from a dozen shafts, about $49,000. At the Deadwood mine Jesse Lyons has reopened his long drain tunnel which he is running to cat the old pay shoot that paid so well on the upper levels. The Belle Fontaine is doing well also. There are good gold properties in the Willow Valley district now lying idle that with capital to open them would prove good “producers. —— + @e-9Truckee Tattle. William Rowlison is having the posts for the new electric light system put up. The posts are redwood and were shipped from Benicia. The machinery for the new plant is expected to arrive now at any time. Had to Dig For It. One of the taps to the main water pipe on Commercial street sprang a jeak a few days since, but the escaping water did not come to the surface of the street until it had percolated through the hard ground a distance of thirty feet. This fact rendered it necessary to dig quite a trench before the leak was found. 7 -2-0@e Right to the Point. Here is a little advice given by the Marysvilie Democrat that will apply with equal force to Nevada City: “Silurianism: is dead. The town is on the move. A new generation will rule things shortly. Do your part. Buiid a house. If nothing better, plant an oranamental tree. If you're a kicker get off the earth. No room for you here. Marysville is going ahead and can’t be stopped.” Where’s Nevada City ? «Oakland Tribune: Here is one time vwhen Oakland missed being in the front row, yet it has no kick coming. The Internal Revenue officers have classifled the beer-drinking cities of the State as follows: San Francisco, first; Los Angeles, second; Sacramento, third; Fresno, fourth. Good Title Machinery. Th> Contractors Crowding Work— Assignment of the Ciasses to the Various Rooms. When . Washington schoolhouse is completed Nevada City will have one of the most sightly and convenient public school buildings on the coast. most thoroughly equipped. Contractor Buck=says thatthe old portion of the structure will be ready for occupancy by the first Monday in October, which is the date set for the beginning of the Fall term. The new building may not be in readiness till the following week, but Mr. Buck says he will not be more’than eight or ten days behind with it at the outside. He expects to have it enclosed by tomorrow, and Architect Cunningham will be up Monday to make another inspection of the labor performed and material used. The construction of the heating and ventilating apparatus is nearly finished. It is remarkably complete and well adapted to the purpose. It is by far the most thorough system of the kind yet introduced in the' northern part of the State, and the builders guarantee its perfect operation. The new building is being wired for electric lights, while gas will be used in the remodeled portion. A complete system of electric bells will be introduced in all the rooms, so as to give the Principal quick communication with all the departments in case of fire or for any other purpose. The arrangements for protection against fire will be perfect. There will be hose reels on each floor so that large streams of water can -be brought into play on a moment’s notice. The fire drill which has for two years past been kept up will be continued and enlarged upon, and with the numerous and large exits that are provided it is believed that in case of an alarm the building can be;emptied of all the teachers and pupils inside of a minute, this being done without the slightest confusion. It is a busy scene around the property, with the carpenters, painters, plasterers, concrete men and other workmen busy in their respective deeurly and late-to finish the work by the time provided in the contract. The work is progressing smoothly, and the different crews seem to be well organized. The Board of Education now realizes that a mistake was made in not asking for more money, as it will be necessary to defer finishixig the basement, putting in inside blinds throughout the building, and other improvements that ought to be made, but which will have to be done at some future time when the funds of the district will permit of it. At the opening of the term some of the classes will have to be put temporarily in Lincoln building, but as soon thereafter as it can be accomplished they will all be concentrated at Washington building. The high school classes will be assigned to the up stairs rooms in the new portion, and tie four rooms on the second floor in the reconstructed portion will be given to the higher grammar classes. The lower grades will all be kept on the ground floor. The library will be in the first story, the Principal’s office in the second. . The Board of Education held an informal meeting last night, talking matters over in a general way. They are giving their close personal attention to the work as it progresses, with the hope that. when the job is done the city will have a schoolhouse of which it may be proud. The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Wednesday evening, the 29th iustant, but several special meetings will doubtless be held in the meantime. Fine Goods.
