TUESDAY..... SEPT. 17, 1895. SSS ee Telephone No. 4. ————— A LEITER-FROM CARIBOO Interesting News Appertaining to That District of British Columbia. QuesnELLE Forxd; B. C., Sept. 4th. Epitor Transcriet: Not seeing any items from this part of the world in your columns for some time I will do my _ best to indite some of the most important, H. A. Brigham, Esq., formerly Superintendent-.of the North Columbia Hill mines, Nevada county, arrived here by _ last Thursday’s stage and on Friday went —____up to Keithley Point by private convey ance. Mr. Brigham is here in the, interest of Montreal capitalists, © This Montreal syndicate was deeded a half interest in a placer claim on condition that they spend $50,000 in opening up the mine, Mr. Brigham will direct this work. . The Cariboo Mining Company’s canal was finished on the 15th ult, and since then’ two monitors have been kept running. day and night on a 300-foot bank. Their next -lean-up will take place about Nov. lst, and their gold brick will be good for sore soyes, The first new potatoes and cabbage of the season came in on the 27th ult, They were grown about fifty miles south of here, Pete Palone, a sprinter of some repute, left here on the 2nd inst. for California, He won a four-mile race here on Sunday last and the boys about Coulterville will do well to be a little ‘‘leery”’ of him, James Cunard is down on Twenty-Mile creek and has charge of an A No. 1 prop_osition, Mr. James Moore, a Californian, who came here in the sixties and who has traversed almost every foot of the Cariboo District, says that Mr. Cunard has one of the very best propositions in Cariboo, James Godfrey of Columbia Hill has won the good grates of Tim Rayl, the veteran trapper, and will spend the winter trapping with Tim about 200 miles north of here. Tim has killed tigers in the jungles of India, traced the spoor of the lion in Africa, hunted grizzlies and bison in the Rockies and taking in his connection his being an all-’round jolly good fellow, will make him just such a man as Jimmie would desire to have initiate him into the mysteries of trapping. : I notice in the TRaNscRir’ several items about the “kicker.” Mr. Editor, send him ap here and if after six mouths’ time he is not grateful for an almanac—though written in Greek—-I will stand a turkey diner for the entire Transcripr. force, The TrRansorirr is sought for first here, for be=sides containing a short synopsis of the Pacific Coast news, it contains far more important, to we Nevada’ countyans, a full minutiae of all county news, A white frost covers the ground now nearly every morning; the.days are clear and cold, the thermometer not registering more than 70° F, Senator McInness and son vf Montreal and General Hay spent a week at the camp fast month, ‘They are stockholders here and went away perfectly satisfied with their investment. A party of capitalists are here from Seattle, Wash., looking for a proposition, Tritpy, —-—— 7+ 0 @0-oDeafness Cannot Be Cured By local applications, as they cannot ~ reach the diseased portion of the ear, There is only one way to cure Deafness, and : that is by constitutional remedies, Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube, When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it isentirely closed Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed, condition of the mucous surfaces, We will give Oue Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (vaused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh ©ure. The Salvation Army in this city has dwindled down to three or four members, Street meetings have not been held for some time and our people had begun to think that the infliction was over and that the Army was about to be disbanded, so far as ‘Nevada City was concerned. But it seems that an effort will be made to arouse new interest in the movement, Last evening ‘a delegation of fifteen er more members from Grass Valley visited this city, bringing their brass band along. After parading the streets the contingent from our sister city halted on Broad street, near the corner of Pine, and held one of their outdoor meetings. ne The singing was passably good, and together with the instrumental music attracted quite a crowd of spectators, The antics and gyrations of some of the Salvationists were extremely ridiculous and _ rendered farcical all statements that might otherwise have had a tinge of religious sentiment. The sensational methods of the Salvationists, if last night’s display can be taken as a sample, are sure to incur the disapproval of all sound minded people, and win to their ranks only the siinple minded, the crafty and designing, or those who from vices of different kind have become partially unbalanced mentally and totally disqualified in other respects to have any greater ambition than to wear the red shirt, cap and other uniform of the Arniy, In this respect the organization, may be doing a great work throughout! the world by receiving into fellowship this class of individuals and helping them to get along and keep out of mischief, but it will never take any hold with the public, even to the extent of gaining common sympathy, if the prevailing tactics are pursued,At the conclusion of the jubilee and minstrel specialties, the Salvationists proceeded to the Theater, inviting al] to come and enjoy the entertainment that was about to be held there, with admission fixed at ten cents. The attendance was fair, but nothing near what had been expected. Tonight another parade and meeting will be held. oe oe Carrain Sweeney, U.S. A, San Diego Cal., says: ‘‘Shiloh’s Catarrh Remedy is the first medicine I have ever found that would do me any good,” Price, 50c. Telegraph: Sunday afternoon J, E, Holden, better known as ‘‘Ned’’ attemped to take his life, at least his friends think so, in his rooms at the Holbrooke House, For several weeks Mr, Holden has been suffering with neuralgia in the face and head and it is presumed that he became. ¢razed from the pain and that rash act was due to that cause, He was in his bed partially dressed when he fired the pistol, a very small one, at his head. The bullet missed-and struck a china cup upon achair near the bed. Mr. Polkinghorn, clerk of the hotel went to the room of Mr. Holden and got the pistol away from him, also a knife and scissors. When seen Sunday, Mr, Holden said that he had no intention whatever of killing himself, but that he was only handling the the little pistol when it went off. He is under, the care of a physician and it is hoped that he will soon recover, gee The Ideal Coffee Pot. People who enjoy a cup of delicious coffee should by all means procure an Ideal Coffee Pot, for which J. J. Jackson of the Bee Hive Grocery Store has secured the agency for this city. With this pot, and. by having the coffee ground very fine, excellent coffee can be made in a few minutes and with ouethird less the quantity of dry material that is required by the old-fashioned methods, By using the Ideal pot all the delicate aroma and flavor of the coffee is secured, ’ without extracting any of the deleterious qualities, which is sure to: be done if coffee is boiled too much, as is .most always the case when the old process is followed. Her evidence is very dainaging to the defendant, and as Mrs, Crossett is a woman of unimpeachable character and reputation her testimony will doubtless have much weight with the jury. The Stutts Dramatic Company. * This company, after making a very successful tour through Sierra, Plumas, Lassen and other northern counties, arrived here Sunday, having traveled the entire trip in their own conveyances, Yesterday they went to Dutch Flat, intending to give a performance there, They may possibly conclude to return here for one or two nights. A few months ago the Stutts Company appeared in this city, playing a week’s engagement and meeting with good favor from the theater goers. Both Mr, and Mrs, Stutts have had many years experience in the theatrical business and have with them avery good company of players, At the popular prices of the day they: would no doubt meet with a good patronage should they decide to revisit our city.
