Hooper and wife, Miss C. L: Hooper and A. G. Hooper came down from Forest City last night. Miss Kerbey came down from the Mountain House today on her way to Grass Valley to visit friends. Chas. Stuckart: is here in the interest of the celebrated Enterprise Beer for which A. Isoard & Son are agents. E. W. Mellarkey and wife, J. Mellarkey and W. G. House, of Hedges, arrived here on last evening’s train. Henry Guenther left today for Sacramento to attend the State Fair, from there he will go to San Francisco. Mrs. Fred Searls ‘and children, accompanied by Mrs. Niles S¢arls, arrived here last evening from San Francisco. Mrs. James Foley, who has been sick for some time, is able to be around again, and her many friends are glad to hear of her recovery. Mrs. M. C. Robinson,. proprietess of Golinda Hotel of Oakland,who has been here for the past month at the Union Hotel for the benefit of her health, returned home today greatly improved. Shooting at Marysville, Marysvi.xe, Sept. 17.—At 12 .o’clock last night a Chinaman stole half a hog from in front of a local market and started to ranaway. A constable detected the thievery and gave chase, commanding the Chinaman to stop. He refused to do so and the officer fired three shots, one ‘of which took effect, and the celestial was arrested, No High Rates Yet. San Francisco, Sept. 17.—It was confidently expected that the insurance compact would have been-signed, sealed and delivered in due form this morning. The more sanguine firmly believed that this would be the case, but they are doomed to disappointment again. and another trial of patience..No settlement was arrived at to-day, although the meeting was largely attended, and a disposition was shown on all sides to throw oil on the troubled waters. Died a Snicide’s Death. SacraMENTO, Sept. 17.—At 8 o’clock this morning a teamster found the dead body of a man on the south side of the levee at 6th and Y streets. The man had been dead about two weeks. In the right temple was a ragged _bullet hole and firmly clutched in the right hand was a 32-calibre pistol. The suicide has been identified as Walker Henry Howard, who recently came here from Madagascar off the coast of Africa. He was at onetimea mining expert in the African gold fields and lost his money at the State Fair races. Desperate Bandits Demina, N. M., Sept. 16.—Twenty bandits attacked the custom house at Palomas Monday morning. Fifty Mexiean soldiers répulsed them. The battle lasted five hours and two robbers were killed. Four bandits are badly wounded. os F Vein of Rieh Ore. Reno, Nev Sept. 16—Hank Miller has discovered arich mine four miles south of the old Pyramid Mining District in this county. He has a welldefined 12.inch vein on which two assays from sack ore go $83.20 and $102.30 respectively. The find is one of great promise. Consternation Created. San Franoisco, Sept. 16.—Registrar .W.M. Hinton has created consternation in the Buckley camp by refusing to file the certificate of nomination of the candidates selected at its recent convention upon the ground that “it does not emenate from a convention represnting a political party, which at the last election polled at least three per cent. of the entire vote of the county,” as required by Section 1186 of the Political Code: Destroying Property. Havana, Sept. 16.—The band of Juan Deigado is reported to have,burned the farms of Gatera, Chincal and Tiraaboque on the canal and seven settlements near Santiago de Las Vegas. The Insurgents burned several farms near Havana Province because the owners surgents. Near Palos, in Matanzas, the Insurgents have burned the tobacco plantations of Herculano and Esperanza, causing a loss of $400,000. In the last few days they have also burned a large amount of property near Puerto Principe.Negro Lynched. Wicuira, Kas., Sept. 16.—Bitter ' feeling against Ben Harris, one of. the negroes who murdered John Buckman, a prominent cattle dealer, culminated ina lynching at Watonga, Oklahoma, last night. Enraged citizens stormed the jail,. overpowered the jailer, drag-. tng . committed at Pasadena, through which . ‘Yates of Jacksonville, Ill, son of War )Governor ‘Yates of Illinois, who took refused to pay taxes levied by the In-. ;an inmate ofthe County Jail, who is; awaiting trial fora series of forgeries . he obtained several thousand dollars, . attempted to end’ his life by hanging himself this morning. He made a rope with strips of cloth. He was ‘unconscious when found, but has’ béen revived. He isa religious enthusist, and the jail officials believe him to be of unsound mind. Without Hope. OAKLAND, Sept.16—A dread of poverty led 16-year-old Fred Mauerhan, to put a bullet through his brain last night. The boy was employed by Jaeger & Beary, dairymen, asadriver. The boy returned about 6 o’clock last evening-from his route, and, after stabling his horse as usual and turning some money over to hisemployers which he had collected during the afternoon, went to the front room of the farmhouse. Joseph Jaeger noticed the boy’s long absence and started toward the . room. Ashe did ashort wasfired. J aeger ran to the apartment and found the boy stretched out upon the floor. There was a wound inthe right side of his head. Young Mauerhan had recently threatened to kill himself. He told Jaeger he did not want to face the crushing life of labor, from which he had nothing to hope for but’ poverty. Knows Him Too Well. Kansas Crry, Sept. 16.—In the Republican county convention here one of ‘the principal:speakers was Judgé Richard occasion tosay that from his association with Mr. Bryan as a schoolmate and townsman he knew him to be unfit for the office of President. Later, when asked by a “Star” reporter to explain his statement, Judge Yatessaid: “I mean that Mr. Bryan’s disposition is extremely and wildly radicai and uncompromising on any question. He was the bitter champion of everything he believed when.a youth, and could see no good in anything opposed to his theories. I mean that if he is elected, and it should become evident that free coinage won’t do, Mr. Bryan will persist in having free coinage. He is an enthusiast who sticks to his enthusiasl.” Alex. McLean’s Funeral. The remains of the late Alexander McLean were laid away to rest in the Catholic cemetery this forenoon, the funeral taking place from St. Canice Church. It was largely attended. The ballbearers were: Francis Burns, O. C. Conlan, Jas. Donnelly, R. Neville, J. Cullivan and John McCray. Deceased was in the employ of the Golden Cross Mining Co. and was at work in a stope of the Crown mine at Hedges, San Diego county. A cave occurred in the morning, fracturing his spinal column, and he died the same night. aa Orie: Once More Nora Trau. Judge Johnson of Sacramento has granted Leonora Irwin, formerly Miss Nora Trau of this city, a divorce from her husband, Conductor Nat Irwin, on the grounds of cruelty.
