No High Rates Yet.
San Francisco, Sept. 17.—It was confidently expected that the insurance
compact would have been-signed, sealed
and delivered in due form this morning. The more sanguine firmly believed
that this would be the case, but they are
doomed to disappointment again. and
another trial of patience..No settlement was arrived at to-day, although
the meeting was largely attended, and
a disposition was shown on all sides to
throw oil on the troubled waters.

Without Hope.
OAKLAND, Sept.16—A dread of poverty led 16-year-old Fred Mauerhan, to
put a bullet through his brain last
night. The boy was employed by Jaeger & Beary, dairymen, asadriver. The
boy returned about 6 o’clock last evening-from his route, and, after stabling
his horse as usual and turning some
money over to hisemployers which he
had collected during the afternoon,
went to the front room of the farmhouse. Joseph Jaeger noticed the boy’s
long absence and started toward the .
room. Ashe did ashort wasfired. J aeger ran to the apartment and found the
boy stretched out upon the floor.
There was a wound inthe right side of
his head. Young Mauerhan had recently threatened to kill himself. He told
Jaeger he did not want to face the crushing life of labor, from which he had
nothing to hope for but’ poverty.

principal:speakers was Judgé Richard
occasion tosay that from his association
with Mr. Bryan as a schoolmate and
townsman he knew him to be unfit for
the office of President. Later, when
asked by a “Star” reporter to explain
his statement, Judge Yatessaid: “I
mean that Mr. Bryan’s disposition is
extremely and wildly radicai and uncompromising on any question. He
was the bitter champion of everything
he believed when.a youth, and could
see no good in anything opposed to his
theories. I mean that if he is elected,
and it should become evident that free
coinage won’t do, Mr. Bryan will persist in having free coinage. He is an
enthusiast who sticks to his enthusiasl.”
