New Disease Amoug Horses. :
A disease which is baffling the veterinary surgeous in San Joagmin county . gay When
seems to have reached Butte county, al7 the winter st
though cases in that vicinity have not
as yet proved fatal. It attacks horses
io a most peculiar manner, and unless
they are treated it proves fatal in every
instance.
The first symptoms are the appearance of small lumps on the breast of
the animal. These quickly change into
deep abscesses, und others form on dif.
’ ferent parts of the body, eating into
tne bone if'not given proper treatment.
The horse becomes la nguid, and has no
ambition to move, then death relieves
_it.of its anffering. 2
According to the Woodland Mail, Dr.
A. 8. Williams, who is the best authority on horses in that section, stated
taat he had treated a cow recently that
-was similarly affected. From the limited information it was impossible to
form 8 correct diagnosis. He thought’
ithe horses were suffering from blood
trouble, caused by eating unsound, dusty food.
September Prophecies.
‘Professor Coles, the famous weather
prophet of Kingston, Pa. in the September issue of his paper make a hairraising prediction of things to happen/. story finishes up with the curt anthis month. His words of warning are
as follows: . :
Riots, panic and evil deeds will as-ftpnish the natives. :
An epidemic of troublesome bugs
‘will make life miserable in some localities. aoe
High gales and West India cyclones
will spread destruction along the
coasts. *
Phenomenal tides will swell the great
lakes and cause the seas to overflow.
Earthquakes will appear, also mine
caves and accidents and horrible catastrophies.

A Common Need.
An Arkansas editor, reading that a
young lady in New York kneads bread
with her gloves on, says: “We need
bread with our boots on; we need bread
with our pants on; and if our subscribers in arrears don’t pay up soon
we shall need bread without anything
on.” ;

The hydraulic elevator company that

Buried Today.
The funeral of Emil Bettega, a four

‘A man made a bet with a shopkeeper
