IN A BAD WAY,
The Democrats Fail to Find a Candidate
to be Sacrificed,
The Democratic party in Nevada
county is in a very bad Senatorial
plight. Every prominent man in that
party knows, as weliashe knows anything, that John R. Tyrrell w.ll be
elected Senat.r by at least a thousand
majority, no matter who they place ov
their ticket. The best thing théy can
do is to leave a blank space for thet
office. They have scoured the counties of Nevada, Sierra and Plumas for
a candidate and cannot find a prominent man who desires to be sluugh‘eread
in any such way. Several first-cixss
“men. have been urged to accept the
nomination, bat in every case they have
peremptorily declined the emyty bonor, The convention failed to secure u
victim on Saturday last and adjourned
uutil next Thursday to make « nomination. ‘ihey will of course pluce a
name upon the ticket, but the party
named will not be verdant enough to
waste any time or money in trying to
secure the prize. If the Republicans
bad nominated any other man then
John R. Tyrrell there wou!d have beer:
a dozen candidates for Senator.

It Is Shown in Their Nominations for
Congressmen.
The Republicans of California followed a wise precedent in renominating Messrs. Metcalf, Loud, Kahn and
Needham for Congress. They have stipplemented this display of wisdom by putting up exceptionally strong men in
the other three districts. While the men named are new
candidates for seats in Congress they are not new men.
They are not unknown or untried, but are men who have
made their mark and shown themselves worthy of their State
and their party.
It is a matter of especial gratification that the Republicans have put up a man of such strength and character as
sides in Stockton, the stronghold of former Congressman De
Vries. There is a strong independent sentiment in that city
and De Vries received its full strength at the polls. Judge
Woods stands high with this independent element because
he combines ability and honesty with-a-sturdy, forceful quality that especially appeals to men who admire frankness and .
courage. Besides being an old resident, Judge ~ Woods is a’
veteran in experience with an unsullied“reputation and a
host of personal friends. :
Although normally Republican, the Democrats have
held the Second district ever since 1886. As San Joaquin
county went so went the district. For sixteen years that has
been the unbroken record. Judge Woods is just the man to
redeem the district. He is an unexceptionable candidate, .
and possesses strength that is of prime importance. A resi-.
dent of the valley, he is in marked favor with the mountain.
section of the district. Generally the Democrats have won’
play this game inthe present campaign, for Judge Woods is
well known and popular inthe mining districts. Both the
farmers and miners! have the utmost confidence in his fairness and integrity. a
Samuel D. Woods in the Second District. Judge Woods re-/&0ds Snell & Fleming will sell their. man, today entertained a dozen lady
Notwithstanding that only nine days remain in which
citizens may re-register in time to vote at the coming Presidential election, many residents of this city and county seem
to be under the impression that, as their names are on the
old register, they are not required to re-register,
The new registration law, however, makes its obligatory
for all citizens to have their names enrolled every two years.
The old great register has been cancelled and any citizens
who have neglected to have their names entered again at the
county clerk’s office this year will lose their votes unless
they call and attend to the matter within the next ten days.
The last day upon which the citizens may register for
the coming Presidential election is Wednesday, September
26th.
