ERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION By Mail,» 9..» * $6. Per Year . By Carrier, = Delivered toany part of the city: 12 1-2c Per Wee nsianeaeiain THURSDAY CORO ORR MO HEE E cere eee eer nasser ene sees September 18, 1901 rr rrr It Was Set This After. BALLESTERO'S-TRIAL ~ noon for Monday, co = CAUCUS TO-NIGHT. HIS EVENING the opening gun of the campaign will be fired when tlie Republicans of Nevada City will assemble and caucus to nominate delegates to be voted for at the primaries next Saturday. The different precincts will make their own nominations, and the attendance it is thought will be large. It is surprising the number of good and true Republicans who desire to attend the County Convention, which goes to show that interest is keen and there is no division. or_lack ‘of harmony. There are but few contests for nominations, but the Republicans in the rafiks, have a deep interest in the affairs of the party and desire to be represented. And why should they not? The ‘Republican party has given the country a grand administra. tion and the people know it; and they are not being misled by any statements of the opposition and the masses are in the Republican party and are going to vote the ticket from George C. Pardee down to the humblest constable. All Republicans should attend the caucus at their respective precincts this evening, and voice their sentiments and help to make the campaign one not to be forgotten, especially by the Democrats and others who claim the distinction of a party. 2 aN aneeeeean ~ Refutation Is Unnecessary. HE allegations of two San Francisco papers as to Dr. Pardee’s pick-handle campaign against railroad strikers is peculiarly mendacious. In those times the strikers took possegsion of everythitig, stopped trains running for ten days, and not an arrest was made, as the records show, in the city of Oakland. ~~ If'Mayor Pardee attempted to preserve order and protect property it was what he was elected and sworn to do, but it was never discovered till more than eight years later that he attended his duty with any brutality as is charged. At the iime nobody heard of it. But any refutation is unnecessary and insulting even to the lowest indulgence. The charges are puerile and of that frankly malicious kind that fall of their own weight. On the contrary, however, it is generally known that at the time of the great railroad strike of 1894, and when the industrial army of 500 went to Oakland from San.Francisco, Mayor Pardee managed to preserve the peace of the city. When the band of unemployed reached Oakland he immediately secured a large building in which he housed and fed them until he secured a train into which he loaded the army and sent it on its way to Washington, D.C. Dr. Geo. C. Pardee, the standard bearer of the Republican party of California is a man who will receive the hearty support of his party for the Governorship. A man of high attainments, of unquestioned integrity, of wide acquaiutance and a native son of the State, he has all the acquirements necessary to make one of the best Governors that has ever been elected to the gubernatorial chair in California. He is astaunch and true friend of labor unions and of the laborer as well, and the following statement of Dr. Pardee on this issue is an open avowal of his sympathy in the working man’s cause: “As regards the question of labor unions, I think Presi-. dent Roosevelt, in his address to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers the other day put it about right. I, too, believe, thoroughly in the organization of the working people. Every cent of increased wages they get and every minute they are able to cut down the time spent at their daily toil makes them better, more intelligent and more prosperous citizens; gives them more comforts and more luxuries; permits them to send their children longer to our schools and universities; makes everybody more prosperous and contented, and, in every way, improves the body politic. Andall this applies not alone to the members of the unions, but also with equal force to all working people. Upon the advancement and prosperity of the working people depend the advancement, prosperity and perpetuity of the American nation. And I am heartily in favor of anything that will bring about these results.” Social Function. “ The ladies of Trinity Episcopal church will give a tea and reception on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday. At 2 o’clock Ballestero was brought into Court, and he entered a plea of not guilty. The Court then set the case for trial on-Monday, Octoher £, 1902. : = A Strong Nominee. One of the ablest men that has been nominated for oftice by either party in this S’ate thie year, is Alex Brown of Milton, Ca'averas couftty, as a member of the State Board of Equalization from the Second District, of which this county is a part. fhe name of Alex Brown is asynonym of honesty, and he is ever watchful of the interests of the people. Four years ago he was elected to this office, and was chosen as Chairman of the Board; for the reason that his colleagues recognized in him e man of executive ability. He spoke in this county during the campaigno of 1898, and hie straightforwardness so impressed the voters, that they tallied to bis support at the polls, You should remember-bim again on the 4th of November, and by this means reward a faithfal public servant. ‘ ! . ————_ -oe Laid To Resi. The funeral of the late William Scott took place this afternoon under the auspices of the Fire Department and was very largely attended. Ventura Free Press: Defeat is far away from the question now. Pardee is of tbat class of men whodo not know the meaning of the word defeat. It is not in his lexicon, He is and bas always been foremost in all movements of his home towm that promises for her betterment. He astocd likea stone wall against all encroachments of corporate interests when the interests of the people were at stake. He is too positive for a politician in the accepted sense of the term, Lut he is stroug teciuse his fositiveness is backed by honesty of purpose. ——. + e@e + _—_ Advertised Letters. Pressley’s throat is cut from ear, and the woman is unconscious from ‘a blow on the head that caused concuseion of the brain. The man is conscious and says that he was in bed when bis throat was cut, but says he does not know who did the cutting. How. Pressley has twenty-four hours is a wonder. His windpipe-is completely severed and the aesophagus cut clear through to the back, and the head is almost half severed. By pressing the chin down toward the chest in such a manner as to bring the severed windpipe together the man can speak in a voice that is scarcely audible, and ‘in this manner He denies having any trouble with bis wife. © Near Starvation.
