The California State Board of Trade is a growing institation, and in keep. fog with its growth it has made a number of innovations recently in the line'of increasing the efficiency of its work and rendering its exhibit more popular. Some five or six additional counties have within the last few months affiliated or renewed their affiliation with the Board and have put in new exhibits, while some of the other counties have very materially improved their displays. An independent exhibit, gotten up exalueively by the Roard. has heen made in the alcove to the nave of the ferry building, just opposite and in plain view of where all the passengers coming to and going from the ferry boate have to pass. This ie inetalled on.a very beautifal hard wood and plate glass stand, and is itself an instructive and attractive feature. ‘Another new feature is. an attractive reading and writing room which has been established on the main floor of the exhibition hall and supplied with literature and all necessary writing material for the accommodation of the increasing number of visitors. Still another new feature is the collection and installation, in a fine glass case made for the purpose, of at least one specimen of each of the commercial minerals of Oalifornia. This is being gotten up by the Board itself and ie-strictly in line with the Board’s purpose to showin its display as far as practicable the great variety as well]. as the quality of the State’s industrial products. : From Frying Pan to Fire. A Loudonville man was dancing a quadrille when be heard his pants seams ripping, at which he rushed Into a dressing room, where his wife— good soul—was soon busy with needle and thread, he having. first divested himself from his leg covering. Presently he heard the rustle of skirts and realized that he was up against the, horrible proposition.of being discovered in the ladies’ dressing room, which he had entered by mistake, Appealing’ to his wife again, the excellent creature shoved bim throvgh what-she-suppesed to be a closet door and turned the key. “Let me back! Let me back!” he screamed as-he began pounding on the door. “I’m in the ballrcomt?” And he was.—Ravenna (O.) Republican. The Succession. “Of course,” «aid the bachelor thoughtfully, “there can be no such thing as joint rule in a family, Some one must be the head.” “True; but the scepter passes from one to another.” “How?” “Well, at the beginning of married life the husband holds it; then it gently and unobtrusively passes to the wife, and he never gets it back again.” “She keeps it forever?” “Oh, no; the baby gets it next.” Growing Suspicious. “J wonder who it was that said politeness doesn’t cost anything,” said Farmer Corntossel. “Don’t you-believe it?’ “Well, I have my doubts. Whenever I go to town and some stranger Is especially polite to me I always feel as if it was liable to cost me anywhere from $1 to $75, accordin’ to how much I happen to have.”—Washington Star. Vanadium. Vanadium does not melt in a heat of less than 2,000 degrees F., is not affected by any acid, and increasing, as it does, the ductility of copper, it is very valuable to the makers of electrical appliances, but the price being $600 a pound, It is almost prohibitive. A Slim Outlook. “J think your papa, dear Rosa, been making inquiries about me.” “what has he told you?” “Nothing. But he offered me 4 clgar, and it was simply frightfui!"— Fliegende Blatter._ ——~--80 Excursion to the Fast. MANSFIELD, General Agent, 625 Market st., San Francisco, Cal. % Thomas Nivens Passed tomorrow o’clock. —— FiFrom this’ Rarth Last Evening. Thomas Nivens, who returned to this city several days ago from Old Mexic>, to recuperate after a serious illness with typhoid fever, succumbed to the inevitable at 8:30 last evening. When he seemed to be improving, a turn came for the worse, and he was compelled to take to his bed. It was deemed necessary to perform an operation as a last resort, and yesterday afternoon the operation was _— performed, and it was thought successfully, but it proved otherwise, and the spirit of Thomas Nivens passed to its Meker._Thomas Nivens was _raised.ta manhood’s estate in this city, and was highly esteemed by all his: acquaintances. He learned the trade of moulder and became so adept that bis services were always in demand. He was aged 82. years, 10 months and 4 days. He leavesa father and mother, Mr.and Mrs. Archibald Nivens Sr.; five brothers, Archie Jr., who is in Corea; Jobn, in Telluride, Colo.; William, of Forbestown; George, of Sacramento, and Dahl Nivens of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Rowe of this city, and Miss Jessie Nivens of Los Angeles. With the exceptions of the brothers in Corea and Colorado, they were all present at his bedside when the end came. The funeral will take place from the family residence on East Broad street, (Friday) afternoon at ~2 Refused a Permit. At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Anti-Debris Association held at Sacramento last Tuesday, George Sargent, who owns the Quaker Hill hydraulic mine, appeared before that body and asked for permission to operate his mine this winter. Two montbe ago a committee wae appointed by the Association for the purpose of visiting this property and examining. it, Mr. Sargent said that he would raise the dam toa hight of seven feet, and this would be sufficient to restrain all the debris that might be dislodged that the dam had been filled up to its. capacity, and while it was possible to raise the dam from three to seven feet higher, such an elevation would back up the tailings on the sluice in euch a manner that the mine could not be worked at a profit, and that the dam was of a flimsy nature. Mr. Sargent admitted that the dam would give way in eight or ten years, and that it might be burned os destroyed at any time, but claimed that the debris lodged behind the dam wculd remain permanently upon the ground. The Associto permit him to mine. +7or + Headache Saps Your Vitality And wrecks the brain. One dose of Sherman’s Headache Care will cure you.
