The work of putting Sacramento street and the lower Grass Valley road within the city limits in good condi. tion will soon be in full blast. The property owners out that way are showing a commendable willingness to do their share. Already 250 tons of macadum have been hauled to the road, and more can be used to advantage if the Board of Trade will assist in providing it. The work of distributing this rock will te commenced the present week. Street Superintendent Murchie is giving his personal attention tc the operations, and under his direction: the city will begin today putting in a>me new culverts and repairing others that are out of condition. In a short time the thoroughfare wil] be is iirstclass condition from John Treanor’s place ut the head of the depot hill to « point opposite the slaughter house where the county turnpike has its northern terminus. As soon as the wire arrives the Electric Power Company will put in the additional lights recently ordered by th Trustees. There will be one”on the turn in the road just south of ‘Hieroni mus’ brewery, one nearly opposite John Cleave’s place and one in: front of the old Cashin place. ; At the same time cnere will be a light put up at the Campbell corner to light Zion street and upper Sacremento street, and another in front of the Lones place on West Broad street. The City Trustees will continue their efforts forthe betterment of our streets as rapidly as possible. Main, Commercial and other streets are on the program for their attention at an early date. ~s Following the Dip. One Aug. 15, when the libations hag been copious and the old fellows in the In. valides had grown more talkative than usual, Gauillac began to talk about the fact that ‘‘the Little Corpwral’’ had spoken to him, a mere soldier. He said be would never forget it. ‘‘Indeed! You have never told us about that,’’ replied Bernardin. ‘‘When did he speak to you?”’ : “When? Oh, that’s my affair!’’ ‘Well, but what did he say to you?’ wy affair.’’ “Yes, but'’— ‘*Well, he was passing along in front of the regiment, and when he came opposite to me he stopped and said’’— ‘‘Well, what did he say? You surely don’t hesitate to repeat it?’’ “No, no. I don’t hesitate. He said to me—er—that I looked likea d——d fool!"’ replied Gauillac, with an effort, Bernardin burst into a noisy laugh, and in a teasin anner said: Perhapbhe was right, but when the devil did he say that to you?”’ “The eve of the battle of Lutzen, when he was reviewing the regiment!”’ ** *Cre nam, you don’t look likea A——d fool! You are onel’ It was not to you he said that. It was to me!”’ “To you, to you, Bernardin?’”’ “Yes. yes, to me, and I'll prove it. We were elbow to elbow. He stopped in front of us, The colonel drew a notebook from his pocket, put his sword under his arm and said: = ‘* *He is very brave.’ To which the emperor replied: : ‘**That is rot sufficient,’ and added, He must also have the appearance of a fool.’ And as he spoke it was me he looked at— yes, me!’ ‘‘Bernardin,’’ cried Gauillac in asolemn und threatening manner, ‘‘you are telling mea lie. You are trying to steal from my heart one of its dearest memories. You are a bad fellow and a'’— ‘*Ab, you have got the swelled head at my expense! I will not suffer it.’’ “Nor will I!” “What next, then?’’ “Bah! I am angry with everything snd especially with you, who are jealoue of what the emperor said to me.”’ “You ara nothing more than a_ beast, an arch beast and an old bumbug!’’ cried Bernardin in a state of exagperation anc ready to throw a bottle at Gauillao’s head. “Kh, bien! I—Lshall’”’— ‘“There’s no need to complete your sen tence! Such insults are washed out only with blood. You will hear from me tomorrow.’’ And Bernardin went out proudly with his head in the air and his legs firmer than they were at the beginning of the dispute. Next day they met again in th« Bois de Clamart, Bernardin brought with him two swords, fredhly sharpened and wrapped up ina piec cloth. He handed them to the ie and quiet), took off his cloak, avoiding’ hjs adversary's eyes and without saying a word. One of the seconds, a decorated Invalide, who had served with the two champions aud who, was known as Big David, took the two sabers, stuck them in the ground and said: “This is not all. I want to know hefore we go any turther why you two arc going to fight. gad, I'll take my leave!’’ Gauillac and Bernardin seemed a little disconverted by this simple question. The) exchanged glances and replied together: “That is our affair alone.’’ “Not at all, not at all,’ replied Biz David, with a very pronounced Aleatia: uecent. ‘It is also the affair of the seconds. We-cannot allow old comrades tc fight unless they have a good reason.”’ “Eb, bien,’”’ said Gauillac. ‘ Bernardin bas insulted me!’’ “It is not true. It is Gauillao who ip. sulted me, and who’’— ‘But why? What about?” They realized so keenly the humor of their position, these old soldiers, that ucither of thein answered the question. “You will not explain? Then I shall at unce go howe,’’ declared Big David. ‘*Listep a inoment, David, A second is like a confessor. I will tell you the whok thing upon the condition that you wil! not prevent us fighting.’’ And Gauillac related faithfully ti whole quarre), vid began to gainbol and out capers anc flourish his stick in such @ manner thai they feared he was about to have a fit. He uttered some inarticulate sounds, in the midst of which certain words were nevertheless distinguishable. “Such d——d fools, sach d——d fools!"’ Finally be calmed down, and, his eyes still filled with tears of delirious joy, he suid: ‘“*Yon are a couple of clowns. peror said that to me.’”’ Bernardin and Gauillac, moved by thc same imopulse, approached Big David witi, frowning eyebrows and closed fists. ‘They would have ‘struck him; but he stopped them with a gesture. “Let we speak first, and afterward you can do as you please,’’ he cried. ‘‘The night before the battle of Lutzen I was chusen by the colonel to carry a secre! message to which tbe emperor attached the greatest importance.
