speakers, the mediocre speakers and
the speakers of little or no notoriety,
and from the campaign literature and
newspapers of the country, there is but
one conculsion to arrive at on the subject of the Presidential election:
McKinley will be elected.
Statistics of the election of 1888 and
1892, and the general out-look as it
stands at’ present, enable us to figure
out about what States of the Union
will surely go for McKinley and what
States will likely go for. Bryan. Our

Among the dovbtful States we give
California, which ‘went Republican in
1888 and also in 1895, ‘and but for the
monetary question is by all oddsa sure
McKinley State. Connecticut, in our
doubtful column, in 1888 gave Cleveland
a plurality of 336, and in 1892, again
gave him a plurality of but 195. With
the same ratio of Democratic loss (and
we believe it will be much greater) this
State will also be safe for protection
Delaware in 1888 gave Cleveland a
plurality of 3,041 votes, and in 1892 gave
him but 498 plurality.
A muchsmaller Republican gain in
Delaware will take her also for the
phoid fever. Deceased leayes a wife
and five children. One brother and an
aged mother also survive him. “Dory”
Van Slyke was well liked by all who
knew him. He was a native of New
York, aged’ 48 years. The funeral will
take place from the Congregational
Church tqmorrow afternoon at 2:30
o'clock.

grand old party. Kentucky, never
known to give anything less than a 10,000 Democratic majority, we put in the
doubtful column on account of her antics in the spring election of a few
months ago, when that awful Republican billow rolled over and. washed her
clean. Everything considered—Kentucky is almost a sure Republican State.
Our Democratic and Populistic
friends may say we are crazy to place
Nebraka(Bryan’s own State)in the
column of unceiiainty, but we can’t
help it. We really hope he may carry
Nebraska, but it will require the official
returns in November to convince us,
In 1888, Nebraska gave Harrison a plurality of 14,182; in 1892 she excelled herself by rolling up the magnificent plurality of 62,284 for the same candidate.
Admitting that we may lose even 60,000
of this great plurality, we will have over
2,000 which is enough to hold the State
indoubt. The Dakotas came into Statehood after the election of 1888; In 1892
North Dakota Democrats and Populists
fused and carried the State by the
enormous plurality of 181 votes, while
South Dakota rolled up the handsome
plurality of 25,807 for the Republican
party. South Dakota should be in our
column of sure States for McKinley.
Washington, also a new State, in 1892
being a Pacific Coast State, we are content to leave it doubtful on the money
question alone. West Virginia, with
less than 2000 plurality in 1888, and a
little over 4000 plurality in 1892 for the
Democracy, isa doubtful State in 1896
by reason of the fact that her manufactories and mines make a much better
showing when they are running under
Republican rule than when they are
idle under Democratic rule. ;
The States of Utah, New Mexico and
Arizona are not included in this summary, as they are allnew States since
gave Harrison a plurality of 6,658, but .
