NOT ENCOUBAGING To
JAIL BREAKERS.
RIMINALS in general will derive little encouragement
from the experience of the convicts who managed,
through an extraordinary combination of ‘favorable
circumstances, to escape from Folsom. ~What has happened
to the fugitives is not calculated to encourage other convicts
to follow their example. Their success has been temporary
and is tempered by extraordinary hardship and by penalties
yet to come. ~Of the thirteen who gained their liberty, éne has been
killed and six recaptured. The last thus far to be recaptured is “Red Shirt Gordon,” who succeeded in getting so far
away as the State of Texas, but he was re-arrested and allthe ,suffering and hard draft which he eudured in order to
reach that locality has availed him nothing. He and all the
balance who have been recaptured will be tried for murder
and be hanged or sentenced to imprisonment for life. The
fruit of their enterprise-is far from having a sweet savor.
The sevenjstill at large are skulking and hiding in continual fear ot being recaptured. Since their escape they have

Tennis Club to Meet
The members of the local tennis

willthen be decided as to whether a
datce or whist party is to be given by
the club at aneurly date, The matter of giving something in the way of

desire of the members for some time,
and the coming occasion is to be made

To Leave Old Home
Mrs. Stiles, relict of the late lamented “Jack” Stiles, will leave Wednesday morning for San Francisco, where
she will spend her declining days with
her daughter, Mrs. W. R. Rigby, who
is now a resident of the Bay Oity.
Mrs, Stiles is one of the oldest pioneer
ladies in the Qaeen City of the Sierras,
having come to this prosperous mining city when it was nothing more
than a mere camp and the glow of the
rising san cast her mantle of lightness
over a struggling and ambitious people
some of them destined to see their hopes
and ideals realized—Mrs. Stiles being
of the chosen few. She is knoxn and
loved universally in the town where
she has dwelt so continuously and her
departure will cause a pang of sadness
to the bearts of many, who have
learned to listen for the footsteps and
bear the cherry voice of the familiar
aod kindly old lady who bas sv long
been one of them.

Removed the Cause
Mrs. Edward Ninnie of Gold Flat,
who has been laid up with a severe at.
tack of quinzy of late, was this morniog operated upon and the cause of the
troablesome malady—the tonsils—re.
moved. Dr. Muller performed the
operation, which afforded mpch needed relief to the lady, who will speedily
regain ber former health. ;
Ed. Nionla, the lady’s hasband, who
has been troubled with a poisoned
hand for some time past, and which
was healing nicely, &pfortanately
struck the member while working in
the Lecompton mine the other day,
causing the hand to again swell and
fester. Last night Mr, Ninnis was
again forced to have the old injury
opened up, from which a great quantity of pus and other poisonous matter
was removed. Afterthe member was
thorougbly cleansed and soothing and
bealing lotions were applied Mr. Ninnis felt much relieved. With proper
care no serious results are anticipated,
As yet he has not been incapacitated

Communication Received By the State
Department Urges Our Government
To Do Something Toward Stopping Turkish Atroelties. —
i
WASHINGTON, Sept. 21.—A communication has reached
the State department :which urges the Government to take
some action towards stopping the Turkish atrocities. The
pressure does not come from missionaries, but its is thought
to be upon the State. Department to end the present conditions. The State Department has a message from Minister
Leishman but refuse to make its contents public, except that
it contains no alarming news.
Advice from Rila says a serious engagement occurred
there which resulted in a loss to the Turks of five hundred
killed.
Many villages were destroyed by the insurgents.
