STRANDED AMONG STRANGERS
The Hard Lines of a Rascally Photographic Artist.
The Susanville Mail says: “Harry A.
Rodgers, the photographer, in accordance with announcement through local
papers, made his appearance in Susanville early in the week, and we presume
would have opened a gallery in Susanville, bat Messrs. Moore & Amsden,
photographers of Nevada City, arrived

possession of the photograph outfit,
leaving the festive Harry stranded, and
‘among strangers. He was equal to the
emergency, however, und from the
wreck disposed of ‘a few articles, realizing the wherewith to purchase a ticket

that place Thursday morning. He has
gone from our gaze like a beautiful
dream.”
The Quincy Independent of Wednesday says on this same subject: “The
Mr. Rogers, referred to above, is the
enterprising young artist who while
plying his calling i Quincy a few
weeks ago, contributed to city papers
one or more higbly sensational re, ports regarding rich finds of gold in
-Piumas by Roderigo and Antone, all of
«which were figments of a lively imagimation.”

County-. HURT BY THES HORSES.
David E. Morgan Has @ Mishap on
. the Middle “Yuba.
' Last Wednesday afternoon David E.
Morgan, assistant cashier of the Citizens Bank at this city, had a narrow
escape from being killed. He was
‘Stepped upon by a refractory horse,
one of the wheels of a heavy carriage
passed over his body, and he is now in
bed at his home on Main street being
doctored. 3 met:
Mr. Morgan with his brother Frank
and two other men had driven ina
double carriage to a point on the grade
leading down to the McKillican mine,
four miles above Moore’s Flat. It isa
wild, rugged ‘spot. , They were on mining business.and went to a point off
the road. Finally they wanted to turn
the rig around in a contracted and
rough place. David E. Morgan hud the
horses by the head and the others were
lifting the vehicle. The horses became
frightened and reared. Mr. Morgan
fell under them, and one of them
brought a hoof down on his left handAt the same time the team sprang forward, drawing one of the wheels over
his back. This happened late in the
afternoon. The party immediately
started for this city with the injured
man, arriving at one o’clock yesterday
morning. He is pretty sore yet, but
none of the hurts are dangerous. It
will be several days before’ he is himself again, however.
SANITARY LEGISLATION,
A New and Sound City Health Ordinance to be Enacted.
The present town ordinances relating
to sanitary matters and the enforcement of regulations are in a mixed and
altogether unsatisfactory condition.
They are scattered all through the
records, and in some cases are hardly
worth the paper they are written on.
Then.they are incomplete and entirely
inadequate in many respects for present
conditions. The city fathers will
shortly reconstruct this branch of
legislation and adopt a comprehensive
and forcible ordinance, that will invest
the health officer with all the necessary
authority to properly perform his
duties. As itis now he has to depend
in @ measure upon the people’s willingness to follow bis instructions.
NO MARKET FOR PRUIT.
Despite the Pact That This Year's Crop
Is Superior,
For the first time in many years the
fruit trees.in this part of the State are
comparatively free from such pests as
the codlin moth and scale, and the pear
crop in particular is one of the largest
and best that has been seen. Yet thousands of tons of pears, plums and othe:
fruit will go to waste for want of a
market. The local demand is not sufficient to begin to exhaust the supply,
and the market in the East was spoiled
early in the season by the bad management of shippers who sent back in
large quantities the first and inferior
picking and by this unwise action lost
money for themselves and disgusted
the Easterners. :

W. Donnelly were appointed appraisers of the estate of the late Miss Rosena Ella Dunton of Grass Valley.
The young lady died in 1895. All the
property that she left was a legacy of
$500 left her by an aunt in Galena, Ill.
The next of kin are her sisters Lucia
and Almira, who live in San Francisco,
and Francis Anne of this county. By
the terms of the will by which the deceased acquired her estate, her mother
who died later and whose estate is now
in probate, was to have been .her sole

BISHOP GRACE IN TOWN,
The Reverend Father Homeward Bound
From a Trip North.
Rt. Rev. Father Grace, Bishop of the
Sacramento diocese, arrived here yesterday afternoon from a two weeks’
trip among the Catholic parishioners
of Sierra and Plumas counties. Next
month he will hold services in Grass
Valley and at this city. The Bishop
enjoyed his journey through the northern counties and met with a cordial reception wherever he went. He says
the good climate and food that he had
up there have made a new man of bim,

Going to Arizona.
Prof. George A. Tread well writes from
San Francisco that he will leave soon
for Arizona to examine a gold mine,
and slso the Buster copper mine, which
is near, the Verdi copper mine. The
Buster mine is said to have gold enough
in its copper ores to more than pay for
mining and’smelting the copper. The
London parties are well pleased with
the outlook, as it bids fair to beconie a
more extensive copper mine and righer
in gold than the famons Verdi copper
mine. The Professor will be gone two
weeks,

Anthracite Coal.
Should the reported discovery of an
anthracite coal region 60. miles square
in the State of Sonora, Mexico, prove
true, it will be a great blessing to California and the Pacific Coast. So far
nothing but the softer grades of coal
have been found om this coast. The
demand for such hard coal will be
great for use in residences, shops, fac
tories, etc.
A Farewell Surprise.
At John Hippert’s residence in Granitville a surprise party was given Saturday evening to Miss Lillie Hippert and
Messrs. Ed.O’Brien and Andrew Hippert. The young lady went this week
to San Francisco and the gentlemen to

dead by this time. The results would
have been much less serious, but the
mine was without an escapement shaft
