2@eQuite a Storm.
The rainstorm which has prevailed
since Sunday night has finally given
way to sunshine and today the welcome face of Old Sol was shining from
the firmament. The storm has been
quite a heavy one for the first, the preCipitation being about 2 inches, and
local weather sharps say that this isa
good indication of fine weather up to
Christmas time. The dust is thoroughly settled and the rain has been
greatly beneficial, although great
damage has been done to hay and late
fruit crops im some sections of the
State. Io this vicinity, however, the
Storm has beena welcome visitor and
the outside work that was temporarily
interfered with will now be pushed to
completion with renewed vigor.

A determined effort was made to
secure the cross for her some five
years ago. A magnificent fete was
organized in her honor. Performanees of the third act of “Phedre”

‘This was followed by a luncheon for

conclusion of which poems in her
honor were read by ncois Coppee, Edmond Rostand, Andre Theuriet and Catulle Mendes, and the
fete came to an end with the coronation of Mme. Bernhardt as queen of
the drama.

Census Director Merriam has reeently employed the most successful

to ask the plain question. But Merriam did it the other way. He asked

When next you chance to eat an
egg, you can easily make an experiment which is not only productive
of much amusement, but also illustrates, in a manner so clear and simpe that even a child can compreend it, the double movement of the
earth, which revolves simultaneously around the sun and on its own
axis.
Moisten slightly with water the
rim of your plate, and in the center
paint with the yolk of the ege—
vou see that you have not far to go
for coloring material—a sun with
golden rays. Then all that you have
to do is to place the empty half shell
of igh egg on the rim of the plate,
and, keeping this latter duly sloped
and shifting it gradually.around so
that the shell may always have an
inch or two of descending plane bo .

Followed Instructions,
In a drug store not many hundred
yards from the capitol is employed
a clerk’ who has been just three
weeks learning how to mix soda in
anticipation of the summer rush of
business in that particular line. He
is an apt student of things pertaining to the drug business, and, according to his employer, he does
just as he is told. His employer told
him when he came to work that if
anybody ever asked for anything
that he didn’t keep he was to say,
“We're just out of ——, but we
-have something just as good.” The
young man caught on exactly. The
other afternoon a young woman entered the store and inquired of the
new clerk:
“Have you any postage stamps ?”
“No, ma’am; we’re just out of
