With all her triumphs there is one erumpled rose leaf in Mme. Bernhardt’s couch: The French government has never accorded her the official recognition that was bestowed on the late Rosa Bonheur and a few other famous Frenchwomen — she in the Legion of Honor. A determined effort was made to secure the cross for her some five years ago. A magnificent fete was organized in her honor. Performanees of the third act of “Phedre” and the fourth act of “Rome Vaincue” were given at the Renaissance. ‘This was followed by a luncheon for 500 actors, litterateurs, artists, politicians—all those who go to make up “tout Paris,” in fact—at the conclusion of which poems in her honor were read by ncois Coppee, Edmond Rostand, Andre Theuriet and Catulle Mendes, and the fete came to an end with the coronation of Mme. Bernhardt as queen of the drama. An Elegant Publication, Calkins Bros. of San Francisco, publishers of the Pacific Coast Miner, have issued a souvenir edition for the month of September, containing a review of the mining and oil industry throughout Northern and Central California. It also treats on other important enterprises now dominant in the mining sections, and each article is accompaned by a number of half-tone sketches ldstrating the same. The publication also contains numerous articles and Nustrations of local interest, among the latter being a fine view of Nevada City, the plant of the Bay Counties Power Co. at Oolgate, and numerous others. Among the valuable acquisitions is an able article by Oapt. P. T. Bernhardt’s name has tever come out in the lists, and she is still without the right to display the “splash of red” that means so much in France.— Cosmopolitan : ees Merriam’s Clever Ruse. Census Director Merriam has reeently employed the most successful scheme for ascertaining who are really the good clerks in any branch of ‘the goernment service. The duty devolved upon him of getting rid of some of his superfluous clerks. The usual way for ascertaining the ones to be dismissed is to ask the plain question. But Merriam did it the other way. Moisten slightly with water the rim of your plate, and in the center paint with the yolk of the ege— vou see that you have not far to go for coloring material—a sun with golden rays. Then all that you have to do is to place the empty half shell of igh egg on the rim of the plate, and, keeping this latter duly sloped and shifting it gradually.around so that the shell may always have an inch or two of descending plane bo . fore it, you will see the eggshell begin to revolve rapidly on‘its own axis, at the same time travelin round the plate. The slight cohesion caused by th o i=] water which moistens ‘the plate counteracts the centrifugal force and so prevents the eggshell falling off the edge of the plate. Followed Instructions, In a drug store not many hundred yards from the capitol is employed a clerk’ who has been just three weeks learning how to mix soda in anticipation of the summer rush of business in that particular line. He is an apt student of things pertaining to the drug business, and, according to his employer, he does just as he is told. His employer told him when he came to work that if anybody ever asked for anything that he didn’t keep he was to say, “We're just out of ——, but we -have something just as good.” The young man caught on exactly. The other afternoon a young woman entered the store and inquired of the new clerk: “Have you any postage stamps ?” “No, ma’am; we’re just out of postage stamps, but we have somene just as good.”—Albany Journal.
