A BRIGHT FUTURE IN STORE,
The Outlook For Nevada City Was Never
Better Than It Is Now.
A mining man from abroad who has had
occasion to visit many of the mines in this
district during the past month, informs a
. TRANSCRIP? reporter that he does not ‘believe there ever was a mining canip on the
Qoast that could show such a radical change
for the ‘better as this same Nevada City
district has during the past year, and he
thinks the promises for the future are
brighter than any of our people realize.
He cites the activity noticeable down the
creek below this city, where enough men
are now employed at the Champion, Providence, Mountaineer; Home and Cadmus
mines to make a small town. The new
forty-stamp mill that the Champion Company is getting ready to erect, and the addition of forty stamps contemplated by the
Providence Company, will increase the numWer of men about 100. When the Cadmus
Company get their shaft down and begin to
breast out and open up one or two levels,
they will probably give employment to
from thirty to fifty men. The vertical
shaft at’this latter mine is down forty-six
feet and work is being rushed ahead by
eight-hour shifts, Over near the Champion
Company’s works a force of men are at
work grading for the new'mill, while millwrights-are busy framing the timbers for
the structure, which is to be‘ one of the
most substantial buildings in. the district,
There is an appearance of life in that locality which speaks well for the present and
future welfare of our town.
The introduction of eleetric power is expected to instill considerable new life into
the mining industry, and it is claimed that
in consequence of the cheapness of this motive power and the fact that it can be
transmitted to points where water power
would be out of the question, a number of
mines’ will before long be worked which
otherwise would remain idle for yeara to
ome. :
The mining operations that are going on
in other parts of the district are proving
successful, and, there is considerable prospecting for quartz being done in nearly every
direction, With what is being done in the
way of gravel mining and the promise of
new ventures in this branch of the industry,
.the outlook for our town is certainly very
encouraging.

Serenaded Them.
Fred Zeitler'and wife arrived here from
San Francisco last evening. Later they
were tendered a serenade by Goyne’s Nevada
ity Band, Several selections were rendered from the balcony in frent of their
rooms at the National Hotel, and the musiciaus were then invited into the parlor,
where they discoursed sweet music, and
where an improinptu social hop. was given,
all present having a jolly time. While the
band was playing on the balcony a large
crowd gathered in front of the hotel, all
glad to welcome home the popular Superintendent and his bride. Although an in~
formal reception, there was a cordiality
about it that could not be mistaken, and
which was fully appreciated by Mr, and
Mra. Zeitler.

Property Holders Should Study and Discuss the Water Question.
Notwithstanding the City.’ Trustees have
passed an ordinance in
water works for this city,
is published daily, in full, on the first page
of the Transcript, but little is béing said
about the matter. That little is being said
in favor of the proposition. It is
portant matter and should be freely discussed, pro and con, that the voter maybe
able to cast his vote in an intelligent manner when the time arrives. :
The City Trustees have looked into the
matter very carefully and considered the
subject in all its bearings, aud are unanimously of the opinion, that the city should
own its own water work;s, Now it is in
order for the ‘people to study the proposition
and determine in their minds regarding the
proposed improvement, The colutnns of

The Turner brothers, Fred and Albert,
who formerly resided on Gold Flat, near
the railroad trestle, are now located in the
city of Stockton. When they went to that

after following this vocation for some time
accumulated enough money to start a business of more extensive proportions. They

Green Peppers,
The-death of the late ex-Lieutenant-Governor J. B, Reddick was caused by a trouble
of the stomach. He suffered the most intense agony up to the time of his demise,
despite the effort of the physicians to afford
him relief. The autopsy performed by Dr.
Simmons, of San Andreas, revealed the
cause of death and the cause of the patient’s
suffering. A few days before he was:taken
ill Mr. Reddick ate some green peppers,
and it was found that some of the skin
thereof had lodged in one of the smaller intestines, forming a dam which would not
‘. permit the passage of food or medicines, and
which it was found impossible to dislodge,
