ALMOST A BAD FIRE.
A Close Call For Charl Charles E. Mulloy’s
‘Dwelling House.
There came near being a disastrous
fire last evening about half past eight
o'clock at the residence of Charles E.
Mulloy, junction of East and West
Broad streets. The trouble occured in
the upstairs bedroom of Lance Mulloy.
The roung gentleman left a candle
burning on a stand near the head of
the bed while he took a bath, When
he returned to the room he found the
bedding and carpet afire, the candle
having fallen from the holder upon the
bed. A post of the bedstead was also
burning. Had the fire gained a few
minutes more start it would have been
hard work to save the house,

Look to Your Registration.
As the time for the closing of. registration and for the transfer of such
electors as may have changed their
residence from one precinct to another
draws near, it is important that. each
: voter inform’ himself as to precisely
where he is at. No man likes to lose
his vote and there is no reason why he
should. J
Remember, if you have removed from
one precinct into another since the last
election, you must have such transfer
noted on the register at the County
Clerk’s office.
If you were on the Great Register: at
the last general election and have not
‘since changed your residence, uo fur:ther action is required to entitle you to
vote, unless, as is the case in Nevada
City where the city has been re-divided
jlately so as to contain four precincts
jinstead of three, thus changing the
precioct number o'4 large portion of
the residents of the county seat. Their
mew precinct number must appear on
the new Great Register.
Displeased Democrats.
The Democrats are not all satisfied
with the result of Saturday’s county
convention, Two of the most prominent members of the party met on the
street Sunday.
“Well, our convention, yesterday
played smash, didn’t it ?” said one of
them. “I don’t believe we will be able
to elect more than one man on the
ticket.”
“That’s about my view of it”. said
the other. “I think if we elect one
we'll be in blank big luck.”
Will Meet Next Thursday.
‘The County Central Committee of
tthe Populists and their candidates will
meet in Grass Valley next Thursday to
lay plans for the conduct of their campaign this Fall. OC. W. Kitts, the
Assembly nominee, announces that the

car and could not see him. _He was
waiting for the wrecking train to
pass to cross over to the other men and
it was the noise of that train that kept
him from noticing the engine as it came
upon him. Neither the engineer nor
fireman saw him and the engino ran on
down to the wood shed before they
knew a man had been killed. The body
was carried into the tool house near
by. There seems to be no blame attached to anyone for’ the accident.
Holland was about thirty-five years of
age and a native of Ireland. He was

from San Francisco. He has two sisters

of the body will be deferred until they

Morning and Evening.
The Jersey City Journal says that
the course of the whole war has shown
learly what the general public were
beginning to appreciate, and that is,
the value of the evening papers as purveyors of news in comparison with
their morning contemporaries. Hardly
an important incident of the war but
found its way to the public through
the afternoon papers; and the morning
news, despite the fact that it was rewritten, sometimes under the guise of
special dispatches, has contained little
of fresh interest from that of the night
béfore. Since the afternoon papers
; . have had thought and money expended
on them, they have shown by their
success that the reading public finds
more interest in the news in the even
ing, and more opportunity to read,
than does the morning reader.

Pioneers Beat the Monarchs,
At Watt Park yesterday the Pioneers
beat the Monarchs in a snappy game
by’ a score of eleven to three. Each
club now has two games to its credit.
The result of the fifth, which is looked
forward to with keen interest by lovers
of baseball, will determine the county
championship and settle the ownership of the lion’s share.of the gate receipts.
