PROPINQUITY.
HERE is a great deal of sentimental drivel inthe
T niaudlin press about matrimony, There are heights
and depths of passionate expectancy to be scaled or
descended into by the soulful few, but, as a witty Frenchman
declared, the average man or woman is as little capable of
the “grande” passion as of the “grande” opera. The plain,
every day fact is that if good people marry good people they
will get on together very well, much better than to try to
live separate, sterile, lonesome incomplete lives.
It is the policy of the law, as it should be the policy .of
all societies and organizations of whatever sort existing for
the purpose of making things better than they are, and especially the churches; to foster and encourage matrimony.
“~The whole theatre of their ministrations is involved in this
one word, propinquity.
Young men would marry young women and young
women would marry young men, quarrel and make up, get
their feelings hurt and solaced, suffer little dashes of vinegar
and pepper and have their injuries soothed with oil and
honey, and so get on together very entertainingly to the end
of life if only they were brought together and enabled to get
acquainted,
Those who are in the social ‘swim do not have to be
bothered about, though they are rather less likely, on the
whole, to be desirable as companions than those who are not,
but there are hundreds of young women who are occupied in
the stores and offices of large cities from morning until night
all through the week who scarcely get a chance to meet a
marriageable man, just as there are hundreds of young men
who are at work in shop or counting room all day who rarely
‘meet a young woman who would: make an acceptable helpmate.
If opportunity were offered for throwing these young
persons together that they might get acquainted it would not
‘be for long that they would trot in Single harness. It is the
lack of a social clearing-house that prevents the striking of
matrimonial bargains. This term does not imply bargain
and.sale, but only an exchange of equivalents.
nder the more conventional forms of social life common to Europe and other old countries it is the business of
parents to seek companions for their children, but our independent, free and easy, western life has abolished this custom and substituted nothing in its place. This has been a
mistake. i
Churches that are anxious
make them of service to the community life can employ
themselves to no better advantage than by enriching the social opportunities of unmarried persons for meeting other
unmarried persons. This to the end that some of the superfluous matrimonial raw material may be made into the
finished product. ‘
