Will Play at Grass Valley.
On Thursday evening, October 4th, the
drama entitled ‘‘American Born” will be
presented at’ Van’s Opera House in Grass
Valley by the same company which last
week gave such an: excellent rendition of
the piece at the abel i in this city. We
wan assure the people of our sister city that
the performance will be well worth seeing
and that it will be equal in all respects to
the average entertainment given by profes. .
sionals. The play is’ highly interesting from

from the theater-goers of Grass Valley,
knowing that the latter will be well pleased
with the efforts of the former,

PRESS OPINIONS

Of Wm. Beckman, Republican Nominee For Railroad Commissioner.
No man ever held the office of Railroad
Commissioner in this State who is so highly
‘esteemed as William Beckman of Sacramento, the Republican candidate for re-,
election to that office, He is a thorough
business man, and during his term of office
nothing but praise has been accorded him
for the manly course he has pursued in the
discharge of his duties. We herewith append a few extracts from our exchanges to
show the estimation in which he is held by
the press:
Railroad Commsssioner Beckman has _reéturned ‘to Sacramento from a visit of inspection of the railroads on the north coast
of the State. It cannot be denied that Mr.
Beckman is assiduous and faithful in the discharge of the duties imposed upon him. He
does not make those duties the occasion of
a juuket, but in-all seasons and in all
weather makes personal examination of the
roads-and their belongings and makes a
practical study of the complex questions
that arise between the railroad companies
and the people. When the State gets a
the Gazette is so anxious for the re-election.
of William Beckman as a Railroad Commissioner—Galt Gazette.
Four years ago our fellow-townsman,
Republican State Convention, .and the people elected him by a handsome majority.
We said then that William Beckman was
particularly well. fitted for the position on
account of his sterling honesty, his broadgaugebusiness tact and experience, and
above all, his indomitable energy in all matters of business and enterprise. A glance
at his official record during his incumbency
discloses the fact, that at all times he
has been faithful to his public ‘trust. He
not only attended to his’ own district, but
has made it his personal duty to inspect and
investigate every railroad and branch in
this State, the better to judge of the wants
of the people, as well as the beat manner to
operate the respective lines of the road—
Sacramento Themis.
. Mr. Wm. Beckman, Railroad Commissioner from the First District since 1890,
is @ deservedly popular man and has made
a most excellent official and should be and
will be elected.—Corning Observer.
No man in’ business life stands higher
in Sacramento than Wim, Beckman, and in
all the social] relations he is a gentleman,
He is more a business man than a politician
and hence, while true to his convidtions, is
liberal and broad-minded toward his political opponents.—Sacramento News,
Mr. Beckman is an old Yoloite, having
cast his first vote for President in this
county in 1852. During his first few
years in California he followed the occupa4ion of a miner in Trinity eounty, and after
that engaged ‘in farming in Sacramento
connty, In the year 1879 he organized the
Peoples’ Savings Bank in Sacramento, and
has been its President and Manager to the
present time. He is a thorough business
man and if elected, as he doubtless will be,
he will be perfectly capable of controlling
his own vote on every question where the
interests of the State are at stake.— Woodland Mail.

When this tube gets inflamed you have a

LABOR DAY NEX’ ToMONDAY.
But the Trade Unions and -the Federal Officers Will Ignore It.
Labor Day.is coming thick and fast this
year. It-will-be here again Monday and
will be observed by the banks as -well_aa by
the courts. The State Legislature ef two
years ago set apart the first Monday of October as Labor Day, to be observed as a legal holiday. The labor organizations. had
asked to have itin September, but the Sacramento solons refused to grant the request,
as they did not think California desired
Labor Day and Admission Day in the same

This year the unions will do the same and
the Federal officials will join them, The
