In the death of Frederick: Nietzsche, the German phtlosopher, the world ¥ Jtoses a figure highly interesting if only from the fact that his life was a typical paradox. He was a genuine eccentric, & man In whom the line of demarcation between genius and insanity was so lightly. drawn that ‘the former was swallowed up in the latter, and the un: tortunate nan spent the latter days of
bis life In a lunatic asylum. Nietz.che’s philosophy was of the negative kind, a kind not very much in vogue these days. He has been actused of being a man of inordinate ranity, and his writings have been subpeenaed to give evidence in behalf of the accusation. But the probability is that Nietzsche had such a strong. personality that he was compelled. to use the personal pronoun in his works to a far larger extent than the general custom witb philosophers: He was. extremely conservative, as is shown by his attacks on this, that and the other wnodern thing. His book assailing Wagner is one of the best known of his writings, and it must be confessed that in this he betrayed strong personal prejudices. Nietzsche carried the doctrine of the survival of the fittest to an extreme bordering indeed on the absurd. He claimed that {t was-wrong for society to found hespitals, asylums and poorhouses. He declared that the proper thing to do was to let the weakest go fo the wall without attempting in any way to remove or mitigate their weaknesses. He even said that it was wrong for physicians and surgeons to interfere with the course of nature and that those who could not of themselves recover from an ‘illness or an injury should die. It was indeed a strange freak of destiny that the man who promulgated such doctrinesshould himself spend years in an institution the very existence of which be had denounced. The probability is that his philosophy has died with him. Sets eisai ages A Chicago.dispatch says that hereafter no boy who smokes cigarettes will be employed in the postoffice of that city. Formerly the rule was merely that the boys employed in the postoffice could not smoke during working hours. It has now-been decided that “all cigarette smoking by the boys in the office must cease and that no boy who is addicted to the habit could get a place in the future.” This may or may not be just to the young aspirants for places in the Chicago postoftice, but it is a condition which confrents them. They must give up the places or the cigarettes. Justly.or otherwise there is a strong prejudice among employing business men all ovgr the country against giving places to cigarette smoking boys. The boy whose fingers are stained yellow by burned rice paper and tobacco is pretty apt to get turned down at about every place where he makes application for a position. The boys may insist that cigaratte smoking doesn’t hurt them. We are not here arguing the question whether it does or it does not, but Just calling attention to a condition. The question for the boys to decide 1s whether they will give up the cigarettes or lose opportunities for employment. The superior court of Pennsylvania has rendered a decision against ticket scalpers. The dictum of the court ts in accord witb a decision filed jn, Philadelphia 20 years ago upholding-the constitutionality of the act of 1863 pro hibiting scalping, but is couched tn terms calculated to destroy all hope of assailing successfully the plain intent of the legislature of Pennsylvania to protect the rights of railway companies and to defend passengers from imposition in the Illegitimate traffic in rall way tickets. The decision does not, of course, assail the position of one innocently selling, an unused portion of a ticket bought4n good faith; but it dpes antagonize a business which the legis lature has sald is “prolific of fraudu lent results.” oY ee Now ‘that the Chinese~turkey bas been’ caught the most interesting performance, that of carving it, will sbortly begin, And when it does eventuate just keep your eye on little Nicholas of Russia. Our Lezs. Professor Yung of the University ot Guef, Switzerland, entertains great fears concerning the future. of oui lower limbs. This-sage is of the opin. ion thut within the next thousand years buincu beings will have forget. ten how to use their legs, and that these limbs, if evolution will not do away with them, will serve as mere ornaments to the rest of the body. present age human beings show a de cided aversion to personal or physical locomotion, and this is more manifest every time a new automatic traveling instrument is invented and rendered practical. Steam, electricity, cable power and the different velocipedée machines all bear an influence over us and create a dislike for walking, .and the future generations will likety have the. convenience of steerable airships at their windows and electric ‘ automobiles at their doors, and. these conveyanceés will be so cheap that almost every one can.own them, and. thie means the doom of our legs. The latter will be regarded as superfluous appendages, no use will be made of them, and who knows but that they may disappear altogether? But -se much more will our arms develop fa length and strength, These are the cruel laws of evolution, and it will be due to their pranks that future generations will again resemble the apes, There will come another epoch of short legs and long aciuis.
