The quartz found in the bottom is richer than that taken out previously. The black, rich streak that runs through the ledge is filled with free gold and will pay handsomely. Experienced miners and mill men estimate that some of this cinder-like quartz will pay as high as $300 per ton by mill process. . Besides this pit the company are running one or two tunnels into the hill further up. Several tons of ore have been sacked up and shipped to Colorado for treatment by a new ting process that has proven very satisfactory in that State. eaticn Some time ago Superintendent Howard had twelve tons of quartz crushed at the custom = mill in Eureka, It was sorted into three i B IG HT lots and the poorest yielded $30 per ton, LOO KS R * . not including the sulphurets. English Mountain Mining Company’s Prospects. #0 The fear has been expressed by many of those familiar with the section that the quartz will become rebellious when a depth of fifty or more feet is reached. It is only three or four miles over to Meadow Lake, where the ore which was rich and easily oa miake worked near the surface became so refrae: tory further down that no process has ever WHAT HAS BEEN DONE SO —— been tried of it with satisfactory results A Large Force of Men Are Rushing the Work of Putting up a Mill and Other Buildings. —— The Transcnirr has several times made mention of the work that is being done by the English Mountain Mining Compavy in the upper part of this county, but there are some facts in relation to the operations now under way there that have not been heretofore published and which we think will prove ‘interesting to many of our rekders. English mountain, on the northerly side of which the mine ig situated, rises to ap elevation of: about 8,200 feet above the sea, and is almost entirely composed of solid rock, Its lofty and craggy summit can be seen for many miles in ai] directions, and ever since the country became inhabited by white people has been a familiar landmark to the rugged mountaineers who have dwelt in that section of the county and to all others who have traveled much through that of from fifteen to thirty feet and in some of the cuts in the northern side of the mountain snow can be found the year round. There is still quite a patch just above the mine, It is a wild, rough country in “the summer season, while in winter it presents 8 scene of dreariness and desolation that is almost beyond description. It is a most uninviting place for any enterprise, and were it not for the very flattering mining Profipects that have been found there the steep mountain side would be gazed upon by the traveler and tourist with only a feeling of admiration of the wonderful works of nature. But the heavy explosions; of blasts and the sounds of other work that is being performed by civilized man, attract more than casual notice from those who happen to be traveling through that section. It is perhaps a half mile from the old Hennens Pass road up to where the English Mountain Company are operating. A good wagen road has been made up to the mine, over which lumber, machinery, provisions and other supplies are hauled in, This road leaves the main road about five or six miles above the foot of Bowman Dam and three or four miles from Jackson's on the other side. 3 Soviet _ Eighteen teams of from four to eight horses each are now hauling Jumbar “+. Sierra Vallaw +~ +4. “mine, a distance of uver thirty miles, Two sawmills are kept running constantly to fil] the contracts for lumber, which amount to over 350,000 feet, to be delivered on the ground within a specified time, Old-timers say—that—the life and activity noticeable dlong the route from: Webber lake to where the road to the mine intersects, reminds them somewhat of the scenes of thirty years ago, during the Washoe excitement, when much of ‘the freight for Virginia City was hauled over that road by team from Sacramento. A large lot of lumber has been delivered at the mine, and two loads of machinery have arrived, hauling trom Emigrant Gap, through Bear Valley and over the old Culbertson road. The distance ig twenty miles and the road a rough One, although the company have men at work putting it in better shape by Dlasting out the large boulders and n some places, At the mine all is life and bustle. The boarding house has been erected and the work of grading out for other buildings is _being rushed ahead. Carpenters and mil]wrights are busy framing timbers and doing other preliminary work, Preparatory to erecting the mill and other necessary buildings. A crew of men are constructing. a double-track tramway, which will extend from the mine to the mill and be arranged #0 that the loaded cars in geing down will pull the empty ones back to the mine, The , A mill is to have twenty s built near Jackson . down the mountain’ fro: way will start, the machinery ‘rom where the tramnIt is expected that within a few weeks the buildings will all be com-. : pleted and the machinery ready to start, Contracts have been let for cutting 2,000 large amount of ete., and anges of men are iminediate Vicinity getting The Lieut. Governor, Wm. 5, Barnes J, A Rober Grass Valley when attempted on a large scale. Superintendent Howard, Colonel Teeters and a gentleman named Sand, who are the company’s representatives, feel confident:-that the quartz will not become very ‘base, and Mr. Sand says he is satisfied that he has @ process by which he can work any of the base ores in that section, not excepting those of Meadow Lake district. He has, we believe, made tests of quartz from the last named place and has located one or more mines there. The prospects of the English Mining Company are very bright indeed, and the manner in which they are driving work ahead shows that the managers are thorough business men. ‘The town. of Graniteville and other parts of the upper portion of the erably as a result of the inauguration of this new enterprise, and will continue to derive benefit therefrom uniess Superintendent Howard succeeds in getting a mail route established from Emigrant Gap to the mine, a project which he has under consideration, and in that event Graniteville would cease'to bea supply point for “many things needed at the mine and which would be obtained at the Gap. Owing to the deep snow that prevails throughout that séction it would be almost impossible to keep a road open-to Emigrant Gap in the winter, It would be much easier to maintain communication with Graniteville. : ——+ +e Specimen Cases.
