Weather Prediction.
Foster, the great*St. Louis weather
sharp, predicts a cool wave to cross the

Auburn, Placer county, is to havea

Attorney Fred Searls of this city and
George Starr of Grags Valley returned
Sunday from a hunting trip in Siskyou
county. During their absence they
killed four deer, one of which is now in
cold storage and will be put into the
big camp stew at the re-union Tuesday. :
While W. Williams and Thos. Scadden
were digging a sewer trench on Spring
street Saturday they encountered a
large lot of old iron which had been
thrown ina hole and covered up after
the big fire of 1856. The iron was pat
in the hole from the site of John T.
Morgan’s blacksmith shop, which was
at that time destroyed. .

For Those Living in the Malaria DisOutraged by Negroes.
Des Motnes, Iowa, Sept. 2.—While
going to Sunday School yesterday
morning Ada Ware, a 16-year-old
daughter of a farmer residing near this
Gity,-was assaulted by a gang of: negroes and carried into the woods. After most of her clothing had been torn
from her body, the girl escaped.
Scratched and bleeding and nearly
naked, she ran to her father’s home
ebout halfa mile distant. and told her
parents of the outrage. The father, J.
-. W. Ware, and his hired man, armed
with shotguns, started on a search for
the negroes. Two colored men, believed to be a part of the gang, were
found and taken to the Valley Junction jail. Miss Ware positively identified one of the negroes as her assail—
ant. He gives bis name as Seymour
Washington and is a stranger to the
commubity. He was bound over to
the Grand Jury to await action on the
charge of crimifial assault. The negro
was brought to Des Moines for safekeeping. 3

Buriad to Death.
Pirtspure (Pa.), September 2.—The
destruction of the Hotel McKee, a
frame structure in the Past End today,
resulted in the death of Harry McKee,
a boy; injuries to four others, and the
narrow,escape of many more. McKee
was burned to death. The fire was
caused by the explosion of a gasoline
stove, which Miss Campbell attempted
to light. The injared were all em
ployes. '

Killed Himselt,
. New Yorx, September 2.—George A.
Kent, the telegraph operator of the
West Shore Railroad at Palmyra, New
York, killed himeelf in thedepot. For
several hours the train dispatcher at
Rochester called Palmyra, but he was
unable to get a reply. Train orders
piled up thick and fest, and half a
dozen trains were held. up at different
points along the line waiting for the
tie-up orders. It was not until Owen
Flynn, of Palmyra, happened to drop
‘. into the station that the tie-up on the
West Shore was relieved: Flynn found
the telegraph operator stretched out on
the floor, dead. He had shot himself.
No cause of the act is known. :
