ture and all the company’s property and affairs are in first-claes shape, as will
be seen by the following excerpts from President D. E. Morgan’s annual report which wae recently submitted to the stockholdére of the company:
During the closing months of 1901, we found ‘it necessary to make many
changes in the condition of our plant, necessitated by the increased territory
covered by our work; also that our steam power be generated and distributed Fiernoon, after all work had been done,
from a céntral point. j ; Pe
We purchased another measuring tank of 1200 barrels capacity and bave
placed it with the one formerly on our lease, where the pipe line of the Standerd Oil Co, enters the property. These are substantially housed, se that
during the inclement weather the oil, being shipped, is not exposed.
Under the same roof is our line pump, used for the purpose of shipping
oil, which was procured and put in place at a cost of $1200.00, including the
necessary connections. This pump wae purchased at a very advantageous
figure, is one of the best In the field and has a capacity sufficient to handle our
production forsearetacome. .
We have alse been fortunate in purchasing a 100 borse power boiler, at a
figure much below cost and have placed it in our power house, where we have
arranged a very complete workshop. This building was finished in April and
hase effected a great saving in our operating work. ;
At the commencement of the present year, the production of crude oil in
Oslifornia had reached enormous figures—greatly in excess of the consumption, resulting in a depreciation in value, until the proceeds from ssles were
far from sufficient to meet the cost of development work, To meet the expense
drilling additional wells, the Directors were obliged to levy an assessment
of 10 cents per share, which assessment I am pleased to state received a prompt
reeponse from the stockholders. Only 5000 shares of delinquent stock was bid
in by the company. : ;
A large amount of detail work bas been accomplished, plucing our. plant
on @ par with avy of like size in the field, and in the performance of this the
Directors have been able to make excellent purchases of material and rigs, so
tbat much money has been saved and the Company favored with a judicious
handling of its affairs.
When this work was completed aud other arrangements perfected for development during the winter months, we again started drilling on the 4th of
January, and since then have been constantly drilling or improving the condition of the wells already drilled.

Well No. 6 was etarted on the 4th of January and completed on the 18*b
of March, at a depth of 1062 feet. Bie as
This well never bore any resemblance to those previously drilled, either ip
the stratas of clay or oil sand and ata depth of 735 feet a body of sand was en
countered, extending to 980, that resembled in every way the water sand
found at the level between 350 and 550 feet. This formation had every indica
ion.of carrying water, which has proven to be the case, and the amount of water now visible in the oil, very materially endangers the well,
Drilling on Well No.7 was commenced on the 28th of March and on-the
Blat of May was completed at a depth of 1080 feet. This well shows 890 feet. of
oil sand and has all the conditions for making a good well, but up to the present time we have been unable to make it pump the amount of oil this. depth
of sand guarantees. With some additional work we hope to make it a good
average well. a
With No. 8 wé have had excellent euceess, This well was commenced on
the 18th of June and completed on the 3st of Jaly, at a depth of 1058 feet, and
ig one of the good wells on our property, both ae to quantity and quality of .
prodaction. :
From August Ist antil September 15th we have had our drilling crews
cleaning out, sand pumping and overhauling wells, resulting in a very satisfactory increase in the production.
Work is in progress on Well No. 9, and as It is located in the territory adjuining No, 8, we hope to bave as good results in the work and in its prodacy
tion as has been attained in the fermer.
OUTLOOK.
That oll as a fuel will almost entirely supersede the use of coal on this
Coast and elsewhere, is now, however, universally acknowledged, and in proof
of this it is only necessary to state that from a copaumption io this State
of 4,000,000 barrels in 1900, it will have reached fully 15,000,000 barrele in January, 1908, and is daily increasing by leaps and bounds,
Wellesly Moore, the British Oongul at. San Francisco, writes hie home
government: “Two or.three years ago the consumption of oil in this city for
fuel purposes did not exveed 1000 barrels per annum, while at the present time} fall in Washington a week ago last
it approximates 1,000,000 barrels, showing how rapidly the situation is being
changed.” To-day more than sixty vessels of all sizes sailing from and about
_ San Francisco Bay are using crude oil exclusively for fuel, and all the Railroad Companies on this Coast are changing their locomotives from coal to oil
, burners as fast as.the necessities of the traffic will allow. account.
That the business will be permanent, there is no question. The Standard OC. MoEtver.
Oil Co., the Union, the Pacific Transportation Co,, and others, are spending Lnc-06e
millions of money in providing transportation facilities—pipe line, refineries “2 $
tankage, etc.—showing their absolute confidence in the future of the industry. . ' County Surveyor :
With a present consumption of nearly 15,000,000 ‘and less than 1,000,000 in . ‘ .
etorage or in sigbt.it-cannot be more than a few months before the price of oil
takes a material advance. :
While the oil industry bas been grestly hermed by “fake” concerns.and
“hot air” promoters, there are, however, lots of good companies, and I say without fear of contradiction, that the stock of any company, HOLDING PROVEN
LAND, HONESTLY MANAGED and NOT TOO HEAVILY CAPITALIZED,
is as sure and certain a profitable investment as anything offered on the Stock
Market to day. .
To quote from the PACIFIC OIL REPORTER, the leading oil Journal of
the Coast, I believe: *‘A few months will see a great change in the Oil Stock
Market, and shares that ean now be bought at a low price will go skyward,
This will result mainly from the general development of Oalifornia’s off
portation enterprises that are now under way.” ;
I wish to acknowledge the pleasant relations that bave existed between the
Amazon Oil Co. and ourselvee, and to thank the Directors of that Company for
their favors and kind solicitations for our success during the past year; also to
add my sincere thanks to our directorate for the manuer {9 which they have political card of Henry Lane, the reg
‘industry, and particularly from the completion of some of the gigsntictrans-. FOr Coroner :

STRIKE SITUAT
nortan Metin eld Today in Connection
. With This Momentous Ouestion,
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30.—An important conference was
held at the White Hoyse today, in connection with the big
anthracite coal strike by President Roosevelt, Attorney~
General Knox, Secredary Moody, Postmaster-General Payne
and Governor Cratie of Massachusetts. Just what action will
be taken is not known but it is learned that the President 1s
very much concerned over the situation. ;
It has also been give out that the hurried visit of Secre‘tary Root to New York was for the purpose of discussing the
situation with leading business men with a view to ending
the strike. It is reported there was no serious trouble todayTlie leaders arc doing everything to prevent the men
from committing disorderly acts. A great crowd of strikers
assembled when the Fourth Regiment arrived at Mount Carmel, but made no demonstration.
. Amount in Treasury
The money in the county treasury
was counted today by Supervisor W.
H. Martin, County Clerk Arbogast and
District Attotmey Power, and it was
found to amount to $61,855.78, which
was 6 cents more‘than the books called
for.
