SEPT. 5, 1895. THE BIG DAM. The Proposed Me.hod of Constructing It, Ble, ~~ The Marysville Democrat states that the United States Engineers have on three different occasions presented reports to the Chief of Engineers, in which they outlined a plan of work necessary to the reclamation of the Yuba river below a certain point. The point designated is ten miles east of Marysville —Daguerre Point—and the plan ‘outlined is for the erection of a monster stone wall across the Yuba river between two high points, where there are great quantities of rock on either side. The plan proposed is to construct-on piles two railroad tracks across, the channel between the two high points, the track being above high water mark so that work can proceed at any stage of water, The rock~-ts to be blasted out at both sides of the river and the same loaded on to cars, when tly will be run out on the tracks and the rock dumped into the channel. “This process is to be continued until the space between the track has been filled and raised to high ago, is getting along nicely. Some fine rock has been taken out of the Pennsylvania mine during the past week. Superintendent E, H. Then, say these engineers, it will be practicable to commence the construction of .a channel from this wal] to the Feather river, which can be done without danger of filling up each winter. The plan proposes the construction of jetties at different points between Marysville and the wall, arranged. so as to turn the And in this way the river will be improved and the channel deepened, giving relief to fhe levee aystem,,abéve.and around Marysville, This would, according to the plans, cost $250,000 or $300,000, which sum would be expended principally for labor and become a great factor in the business of this part of the State. The Commissioners have asked Congress to apppropriate a sum sufficient to construct the wall. Recently Meek has been running lines and taking measurements in the river and on the flats adjacent, The investigations by Surveyor Meek show the river channel to have been improved as compared to the condition one year. ago, a te Home and Abroad. water all into one. channel, Surveyor It isthe duty of everyone, whether at home or traveling for pleasure or business, to equip himself with the remedy which will keep up strength and prevent illness, and cure such ills as are liable to come upon al] ia everyday life. The fact that man comes mto the world wailing has been regarded as a sort of prophecy of the truth that as’ a rule the sorrows of life outnumber the joys when all the returns are in, but an optimist might see an opposite significance in the fact that a man’s laugh remains the same through all the changing years. When the cares of manhood sueceed to the happy go lucky days of boyhood, this laugh of his may be called into use, as it. were, very little, but when it is put into operation it is the same old laugh, and every boyhood friend would know it instantly. An old soldier, who fought through the war with Fred Hartwick, who drives a mail collector’s wagon on the North Side, happened to be in Chicago for a week not Jong since. He heard that Mr. Hartwick was on its postmaster’s staff and went to the federal building to find hini. He took his station at a point past which all the carriers filed to report for one pointed him out. Without disclosing his own identity the veteran approached and began asking Hartwick if he remembered various incidents in the history of their regiment during the war. Of course he did and very soon fell into conversation, orGeo. W. King,’ the hardware traveling} ganizing a kind of campfire meeting between themselves. One member of the regiment was in business.in New Orleans, another was in a bank down in the state, several were farming, one manager for one of the big’ Commercial agencies in one of the large cities, and so on. Sevorabl times Hartwick asked his old companion at arms his name, but the latter only smiled and went on with the conversation. Finally, when it became necessary for them to separate, as Hartwick was obliged to go out on his run, the man laughed outright as he said: “Welk Fred, I never thought you'd forget me after What we went through together. ’’ ‘*The minute he langhed,’’ said Mr. Hartwick, in relating the incident, ‘‘I knew just who he was and all about him, but I hadn’t seen him for 80 years, and he had changed so Is couldn’t have told him from Adam. ,His laugh had grown older, too, of course, but it was the same old laugh.’’—Chicago Tribduty, and as Hartwick came along some . Gave Them Nightgowns. The great diificulty experienced by many \ mother in , ursuading her daughter and her danghter’s young man to terminate their evening seances at a reasonable hour is an old, old story. Many anodd method has been used to move the young man out and the girl to go to bed, but the record was broken by a prominent BostonfRavine mother ajfew evenings ago. The young man was astayer, the like of whom is seldom matched, and the girl helped him stay; the mother could not touch them. All old ‘expedients to influence the lover to observe proper hours had failed. So on the night in question, the mother walked into the parlor at an evil hour -of midnight and presented a night robe to, the young man and another tothe girl. Then she remarked that-she ua. thought they were waiting for something, and left the room, It is needless to say that the young man. departed, and that he has not stayed late since, : piseeeesres Sobers Street Arc-Light Without Polés. They have « neat way of hanging arc lamps in Munich. The lamps are suspended in the center of the street at a height of about 33 feet above the roadway. The weight of the lamp ié taken by steel wire attached to. the house ateither side, A wire by which the lamp is hoisted into position and. which, after passing horizontally to the house at one side, is let down to: a ratchet wheel on the wall, The lighting effect of the lamp so hung is very pleasing, as there is no shadow cast on the street. So even and unobtrusive is the ligi.t that. thé method of suspending the lamps is never suspected until late in the night, when every alterdate limp is extinguished. + ee Bicycle Diseases. The doctors are now talking for and against the use of the wheel. Doctors do not agree as to its effects any closer than they agree as to the origin of life. The opponents of the wheel contend that we are on the verge of the discovery of a multitude of bicycle diseases.
