THE BIG DAM.
The Proposed Me.hod of Constructing
It, Ble, ~~
The Marysville Democrat states that the
United States Engineers have on three different occasions presented reports to the
Chief of Engineers, in which they outlined a
plan of work necessary to the reclamation
of the Yuba river below a certain point.
The point designated is ten miles east of
Marysville —Daguerre Point—and the plan
‘outlined is for the erection of a monster stone
wall across the Yuba river between two
high points, where there are great quantities of rock on either side.
The plan proposed is to construct-on piles
two railroad tracks across, the channel between the two high points, the track being
above high water mark so that work can
proceed at any stage of water, The rock~-ts
to be blasted out at both sides of the river
and the same loaded on to cars, when tly
will be run out on the tracks and the rock
dumped into the channel. “This process is
to be continued until the space between the
track has been filled and raised to high

Some fine rock has been taken out of the
Pennsylvania mine during the past week.
Superintendent E, H. Brown brought some
specimens to the Citizens Bank yesterday
that attracted a great deal of attention. If
the ledge at the Pennsylvania were now as
wide as it is lich, it would be a big bonanza.
J. F. C. Mill and J. McCuen, who recently purchased the Occidental restaurant
from A, Stokes, have sold the place to Benjamin Boone and wife of Willows. =
A paper was circulated and signed by
almost every merchant in Grass Valley, in
which it was agreed to close the business

in order to'give the clerks an opportunity
to attend the Admission Day celebration and

will unquestionably be a general holiday in

and eventually become an impenetrable barrier to the coarse material above that point.
Then, say these engineers, it will be practicable to commence the construction of .a

which can be done without danger of filling
up each winter.
The plan proposes the construction of jetties at different points between Marysville

If the Bertillion system of identification had a phonographbic record of the

2 as near perfect as an identification
ystem can be. The fact that man comes
mto the world wailing has been regarded as a sort of prophecy of the truth
that as’ a rule the sorrows of life outnumber the joys when all the returns
are in, but an optimist might see an
opposite significance in the fact that a
man’s laugh remains the same through
all the changing years. When the cares
of manhood sueceed to the happy go
lucky days of boyhood, this laugh of his
may be called into use, as it. were, very
little, but when it is put into operation
it is the same old laugh, and every boyhood friend would know it instantly.
An old soldier,who fought through
the war with Fred Hartwick, who drives
a mail collector’s wagon on the North
Side, happened to be in Chicago for a
week not Jong since. He heard that Mr.
Hartwick was on its postmaster’s staff
and went to the federal building to find
hini. He took his station at a point past
which all the carriers filed to report for
one pointed him out.
Without disclosing his own identity
the veteran approached and began asking Hartwick if he remembered various
incidents in the history of their regiment during the war. Of course he did
and very soon fell into conversation, orGeo. W. King,’ the hardware traveling} ganizing a kind of campfire meeting
between themselves. One member of
the regiment was in business.in New
Orleans, another was in a bank down
in the state, several were farming, one
manager for one of the
big’ Commercial agencies in one of the
large cities, and so on.
Sevorabl times Hartwick asked his old
companion at arms his name, but the
latter only smiled and went on with the
conversation. Finally, when it became
necessary for them to separate, as Hartwick was obliged to go out on his run,
the man laughed outright as he said:
“Welk Fred, I never thought you'd
forget me after What we went through
together. ’’
‘*The minute he langhed,’’ said Mr.
Hartwick, in relating the incident, ‘‘I
knew just who he was and all about
him, but I hadn’t seen him for 80 years,
and he had changed so Is couldn’t have
told him from Adam. ,His laugh had
grown older, too, of course, but it was
the same old laugh.’’—Chicago Tribduty, and as Hartwick came along some .

evening seances at a reasonable hour is an
old, old story. Many anodd method has
been used to move the young man out and
the girl to go to bed, but the record was
broken by a prominent BostonfRavine mother
ajfew evenings ago.
The young man was astayer, the like of
whom is seldom matched, and the girl helped
him stay; the mother could not touch them.
All old ‘expedients to influence the lover to
observe proper hours had failed. So on the
night in question, the mother walked into
the parlor at an evil hour -of midnight and
presented a night robe to, the young man
and another tothe girl. Then she remarked
that-she ua. thought they were waiting for
something, and left the room, It is needless to say that the young man. departed,
and that he has not stayed late since, :

The doctors are now talking for and
against the use of the wheel. Doctors do
not agree as to its effects any closer than
they agree as to the origin of life. The opponents of the wheel contend that we are on

bicycle diseases. But a good many men

Wages in Japan.
Wages i Japan aré exceedingly low, and,
together with the skill and the perseverance
of the Japanese, coustitutean important
factor in the commercial affairs of Kastern
Asia. The tailor who makes clothes after
thé European style receives the highest pay;
his average is 25 cents a day. Next comes
the stone cutter with 19 cents; carpenter,
joiner, smith, with 17cents; printer 15
cents; field hands, male 10 cents; female,
3 cents per day. Silk weavers are given
board by the employers and $2.70 monthly.
They work from twelve to sixteen hours,
and, as there is no Sunday in Japan, the
number of work days is not less than 350
in the year. The exports exceed the imports of Japan about $10,000,000 annually.

Rich Politicians.
William C. Whitney is the richest man
mentioned in connection with the Presidency. Next,;comes Governor Morton, who
is rated at about seven millions. Senator
Brice is not credited with many millions,
but he turns what he has over rapidly and
it accumulates with each turn, Cleveland's
wealth is an unknown quantity, but he is
placed next in the list. Ex-President Harrigson, Senator Allison and Senator Hill are
each worth about $100,000; Reed has half
as much, McKinley, Morrison,
Campbell and Carlisle are comparatively
poor.
