A NURSERY OF ORATORY.
Talk of Organizing a a Debating Clab—
Why One Died.
Some of our young people are talking of getting up an old-fashioned debating society this fall, hiring a hall
and holding weekly meetings. Why
not act instead of talking? Such a
society would be an excellent thing all
around. It has been Many years
since Nevada City bad: one, and then:
the membership was confined to men
who used to meet down in Hibernia
Hall and urgue themselves blind.
They had lots of fuh-as long as it
lasted, and there was a good deal ef
eloquence developed from first to” last.
Judge Buckley, Postmaster Carr and
0.C Conlan, who were a good deal
younger then than they are now, were
among the champion hair-splitters of
the club. The side that they were on
always won, and after awhile the other
met bers, despairing of ever being able
to cope with such oratorical whirlwinds, dropped out one by one and the
organization died a natural death.

Causes of Drunkenness.
The British Inspector of Inebriates
Says that while immoderate drinking
is-frightfally-common among the in.
dustrial classes, it is still more prevalent among the upper ten, and that
among women of all classes drunkenness is increasing rapidly. Of 442
cases in the Dalrymple Home, 101 were
aniversity men and 316 were well educated; 285 were married. In 228 cases
the downfall was attributed to sociability, 26 to ill health, 32 to overwork,
and in 55 per cent of the cases the ex-.
eess was traceable to hereditary . indications. °

Rerorts fromthe mounts:
rict should be,
as has been said, represented by a Republican, Weare a grateful people.
We realize that President McKinley .
has done, not only for California, but.
forthe people of the whole United
States, and we want to show our appreciation and gratitade by rolling ap a
Republican majority in every District
and every county of the State of California in behalf of its candidates. Now,
so far as the interests of this. convention are concerned, I represent no section or faction. If I should be elected
to Congress, I will encourage the mining industry as well as the industry of
the agriculturist, I know that those
interests are great interests, and I appreciate the fact that California—the
brightest State in the Union, the State
of more industries than any other
State—owes its existence to the mining
industry. Iassure you there is no prejadice in Sacramento against mining;
that isa mistake. Itis true we have
our contests in our Courts over what is
hydraulic mining, but that is settled,
and there is no conflict now.
“We want assistance from the Government; we want to maintain the channels
of our rivers; we must maintain the
mining industry that has made California a great State, and which brought
our fathers here who ‘built it that we
might.enjoy the many privileges and
for our benefit, and if it is my pleasure
to répresént this District in Congress,
every time and upon every occasion it
shall be my hope and my endeavor to
secure that assistance from the Government which we are entitled to, and
which has ‘been <denied to us in the
past. If we read the history of California and realize the production of . :
this state, and especially the production
of gold, which did so much to uphold
our Nation in its hour of peril, there is
a0 one who has a spark of gratitude in
his heart but will feel that industry
should be encouraged and maintained,
and when they say that a man from
Sacramento is opposed to the mining
industry, they make a mistake.”
~~ “Way is it that geniuses are nearly . .
always eccentric?” “I guess it must be
because that’s about the only way in
which genius can obtain recognition.”
