New York September 5.—The extent
to which bridge whist has been played
this season can well be understood by
the fact that one young girl in society
fixed her earnings during the summer
at $2000. She played the game well
and is now that much ahead, with practically anotber month before her in
which to increase her winnings. During the yacht races the interest in
cards did not altogether die out, concerned as ths Newporters were in the
result of the contest. Two of the
largest steam yachts at Newport followed the boats, but for all that their
passengers saw of the races they might
have remained at home. The game of
bridge whist began each day soon after
the boat was under way and continued
to the exclusion of every other subject.

Honowwtv, August 28 (via San Francisco; September 5).-*’The stirring
events of the past few weeks have resulted in a movement to increase the
military strength of _the Hawaiian
Islands, and arrangements are being
made to.add to the forces now here.
It is thought that in the event of some
sudden warlike movements Hawaii
might have to defend herself for a
time, as the United States has so far
done little to make bare: islands safe
from invasion.
It is proposed to have a full regiment of troops here. There are plenty
of men and eight companies are now in
existence. There are plenty of men to
complete the regiment. There are not
enough guns on the island.
