Mr. Miller is operating the Aome Gravel claims on Kanaka that they must look out for their girls, but the boys are gl/Sreomnat6 mostion with pak Ge: lowed a liberty that easily becomes license, and so the social problem resolves itself into this: ““What shall we do to make our boys fit companions for our girls?” The good ‘boy makes a good man, the good man makes a good husband, the good husband makes ‘a good home and good homes. make a good city—and there you have the social aspect of the prob-. alleghany. Mr. Morrill is interested lem before each society that wishes to.make itself of advantage to the community life. What a power the singing school was in the days of old in all the Eastern communities! In backwoods communities it may have assumed a grotesque aspect, and it is not impossible that for this reason it has been “guyed” out of existence. In centers where there choral society, but wherever it was more culture it became a was it taught people how to sing and it threw the young men and the young women into each other’s society and, not least among its good results, it was productive of matrimonial first, then lived together as alliances. They sang together husband and wife, and finally slept their last sleep side by side, while their spirits presumably went to sing new songs in celestial choirs where the vibrations of sound are too delicate to be detected by mortal ears, Where are yourtg Americans now to learn to sing? In school? The verdict is that they do not, at least not so that they can pick up a hymnal and sing a new selection from it at sight, or without stumbling painfully spelling the words. through it as a child might by There are millions of American citizens who do not know all of any one song that was ever-sung, and yet who could sing if they knew how. What if the Nevada City churches, more than they do, were to undertake to form singing classes for young people, elementary for those needing elemental instruction, choral Societies for those that were able to go into them, not alone that young persons might learn to sing, but also that they might become acquainted, and that they might be brought within the range of the power of personal influence for their betterment ?. Is there any doubt of the value that a number of such organizations would result in to the community life ? Such societies need not be made wholly free. The in-. structor will be worthy of his hire and the young persons receiving the benefit will gladly pay the cost. The need is for an organizing central force, and it would seem that this the churches, notwithstanding their manifold activities, might easily supply.
