Getting Ready To Start it up Again—Chances Favorable For Success. Manager H.K. Shockley of the’ Phoenix , Mining, & Improvement Company is growding the work of. re-opening the old Sneath and Clay mine, near the railroad trestle on Gold Flat. The old hoisting and pumping plant is being reconstracted and a new two story building 110 by. 40 feet is to be erected, the Miners Foundry having the contract for all this work. The machivery wil! be run by electricity or water power, as may be determined Jater, but the steam engine heretofore used will be-left in to ‘b> resorted to in case the regular power fails at any. time. It is anticipated that by the middle of October the machinery will be in readiness, and that about two weeks will be required in which to pump the old works. dry. Then the sinking of the shaft and the running of drifts to . the north will be proceeded with, The present shaft ie down 470. feet on the incline, giving, a vertical depth over 150 feet. It was pumped out the last time six years ago, and was then in good condition. It is not likely that any ‘very extensive repairs, wil be required mow. The old drain tunnel is being reopened and put in first-class shape. A substantial flume three feet deep and of the same width has_just.been completed, It, leads from. the, head of: Hitchcock ravine. to.a point just below the Narrow Gauge, trestle.. This flume: will carry.alj the. aurface water.during the rainy season from. the hills. ahove the ravine, The , bed of the . stream passes directly over. the. under-gronnd workings, and withont.the flume. there would be much sipage. ‘When the ledge has been sufficiently prospected and opened up to render such a step necessary. the old’ twelve stamp mill will be entirely. reconstructed into a ten stamp mill. Much of the machinery including the stamps, is as good as it was the day; it. was put 4n place, but there is a vast.quantity of :antiquated gold-saving apparatus that «will give place to modern and effective «contrivances. The property. was recently purchased ‘from Lord Housman, and was capitalized for $50,000 divided into 20,000 «shares. The stock is all paid up at par walue and there is none forsale. It is ymosily held by business men of Cincinmati, Ohio, the only. local shareholder ‘being Dr. A. H. Tickell.of this city who is also. director. Mr, Shockley is not a miner, but. has ‘had wide and successful experience in conducting large enterprises. He will gather about him a.corps, of reliable and competent mining men, and everything so far as he has gone indicates that the property will have. the most skillful handling. Local mining men familiar with = history of. the Sneath & Olay believe . that it is a property of great value and will .prove., yery renumerative to its present owners. Some of the best pro-ducers in the district today were a few years ago in much the same condition :that this one has been for a good many -yeats—idlé because of the imperfect knowledge had in earlier times of work‘ing quartz formations, because of the -crade and faulty apparatus at that time used for the milling of ores, and be«cause of an old-time popular fallacy now thoroughly exploded that the ledges of the district did not. go down more that 500 feet at best. Birdseye subsequently transferred the interest back to Clay for the balance due, losing the amount paid. In running the drifts along the ledge, it was found that the rich chimney extended only about 150 feet, and in the northerly drift the rock ran down to five or six dollars a ton. The mill kept running the most of, the, time; but the owners were not able to! agree, the Sneaths managed to spend: more money than they made,.and we believe mortgaged their interests, and finally, in May, 1865, the mine and other York and Grass Vailey Company, for $27,000. The mill and hoisting works had cost $45,000. Of the original owners, Clay was the only.one' who had any money when they disposed of the property, though the yield up to that time had been nearly $200,000, of which over half had been profits. The mine has been, worked steadily and systematically by the New York Company the past two years, S. P. Leeds being the superintendent until May, 1866, and since then under the superintendency . of Edward Dunscomb. It has never paid as well as during the first few months after the mill was started, bunt has always returned a fair profit, the rock at times yielding between $40 and $50 a ton. The ledge has a westerly dip, its general course being nearly north and south, and lies very flat, the angle of inclination being only twentythree degrees. The incline has been run 400 feet down the slope of the ledge, being a vertical depth of 150 feet. We have no knowledge as to the extent of the levels and drifts underground; but if the ledge retains its present angle of inclination it can be lar depth would only be 1,500 feet. It is thought by many, however, that the westerly dip of the ledges on Gold Flat has been caused by a convulsion and displacement of the surface, and that, when the workings extend to a certain depth the dip will change to the east, conforming to that of the other min“The ledge is irregular in size, but will probably average something over a foot in width. It has yielded during the past year about 400 tons of ore per month, and the average number of men employed in the mine and mill is 48, The mill has three batteries of four stamps each, and is supplied witb ore separators for concentrating sulphureis, with pans, Chili mills, and the most approved appliances for amalgamating.
