THE TRANSORIPT,
Wty Again,
The twenty-four. gentlemen of the.
Nevada County Jockey Club who fleposited $100 apiece in the Citizens
Bank asa guarantee of: expenses, will
not have to make up any-shortage in
settling the accounts ‘of last week’s
races, The receipts will about. cover
the expenses, The buyers of the bar,

came out pretty well according to the
best information that can be obteined:
The fact that last week’s meeting
was at least self-sustaining in spite of
the very small attendance bas encouraged the Jockey Club to determine to
hold races again next year, and a meeting will soon be held to outline the
preliminary arrangements. For the
ensuing year the cash deposit. from
each member will probably be = increased from $100 to $200, giving a total guarantee fund of $4,800.
Saturday Half Holiday.
“It is gratifying to note,” remarks
the San Jose Herald, “that the newspapers of the S’ate are again taking up
the matter of a Saturday half holiday.
The fact that this discussion comes up
occasionally indicates that the movement has a bold on the public mind.
The only thing to do is to keep banging away at it until something is accomplished. “
“In fact something has been accomplished in “every city of any size in
California, and cousiderably more has
been done in San Francisco. In San
Jose the banks close at noon on Saturday, and that is true of other cities.
But in San Francisco nut only the
banks but the insurance offices and
wholesale offices close at the same time.
How soon will similar lines of business
here and in other interior cities’ take
the same course? And how soon will
other lines of business follow the lead?
There is so evidence that those businesses which close up Saturday afternoon ure not just as prosperous as their
neighbors. It is largely a matter of
custom.” ~ i

An eastern exchange prints the following, as the contents df a letter recently received. The picture is probably overdrawn, but on the whole there
