Five dredgers are at work ou the river, or adjacent to it, between Gridley and Oroville, and more are to be added inthe near future. A deed has just been. filed in the offce of the Recorder. in Oroville conveying certain lands on the Feather river trom P.R. Welch and wife to J. O. Platt of New York Oity.: This is a sale made by W. P. Hammon and A. F. Jones to a dredging company, and out of which the two gentlemen are said to have made considerable money. A press telegram sent from Oroville Satarday last says other sales of this class of property are sogn to be made taken up by M. When the new élcctric power is ready for delivery the cost of running these dredgers will be materially lessened. Maryland Superstitions. There are superstitions throughout all the counties of Maryland concerning Crossroads and running water. {Witches are supposed to make their home at the crossing of two roads and to appear-there at midnight. One peeuliar thing about witches is that they cannot get across running water, and a stream of any sort always acts as a protection to the nightly prowler, who will follow along the bank of a atreaminpreference to the road. These are some of the things which are more generally believed in the country around Washington and along the eastern shore. Some of the artieles of the creed of the superstitious in that neighborhood are: : . If you sweep your room at night, you sweep away your wealth. Never. shake crumbs out of a window after dark. They are supposed to fall into the eyes of the Lord and to disturb the spirits of the dead who swander abroad at. night. Don’t wash your hands in water in which eggs have been boiled. Yet they had their uses. Occasionally a man would come to him with some scheme which he did not care to refuse outright. “ My directors are a difficult body of men to handle,’ he would say. ‘I'll submit it to.’em, but I warn you that they are hard to manage.’ “The matter would be ‘submitted to the board when it assembled and promptly rejected, “‘There,” the commodore would gay when his visitor came to learn the result. ‘I did the best 1 could, but 1 told you in advance that my directors ‘were an obstinate lot.”—New York Herald. oe Art and Nature.
