Today the Dairy Transoript is forty one years old, it having been estab lished on the 6th day of September 1860, by the present senior proprietor, Che Whole Country In Deep Mourning. The people of Nevada City were terribly shocked today when the sad intelligence reached here that Presidents McKinley, the chief magistrate of the United States, had been assassinateds on the Pan-American Exposition§ grounds, at Buffalo, New York. They first un ws received stated that the® . President had been shot twice in the stomach by a stranger, when he was about to enter the Music Hall, and all who heard the news could scarcely believe that such a dire catamity could bave happened, but they grasped .a the faint hope that the wounds might not be fatal. Bat soon after the news of his death arrived and it was then realized that the worst had happened. The news traveled with lightning rapidity over the entire city, and soon there was a tear-drop in every eye which signified the great esteem in which the honored President: was held,™ -and that same feeling was manifested) by the entire people throughout the United States. ~ Upon receipt of the news of the President’s death, all the bells in town were tolled, but this ceased when a late dispatch arrived announcing that he was Still alive, but that he could no recover. The flags. of our city were also placed at half mast when the news of his death was received.
