BUSINESS WILL REVIVE.
Senator Perkins on Commercial and
Political Outlook.
Since his return from Washington a few’
days ago Senator Perkins has—displayed—a
keen interest in the State campaign. He is
a frequent visitor at the rooms of. the Republican State Central Committee, and ix
taking an active part in the work of organization and preparation for the coming election.
“Tt is a strong State ticket,” he said ina
brief. interview with a. Bulletin -reporter.
“Mr, Estee is a gentleman for whom I
“shave a high regard. He is both able and
trustworthy, and I think he should be
elected. With Mr. Estee as Governor, no
bad or corrupt measures will’have a chance
of enactment.
.
‘‘As to the general business outlook my
opinion is that there will be a speedy revival, in spite of the bad tariff legislation.
The reagon is that all uncertainty has been
removed and the business world is relieved
from the suspense under which it has long
labored. Fs
*‘As a business man.I talked with many
manufacturers and other men of business
during my stay at Washington and in other
cities of the East. They all had been restricting their operations as much as possible, pending legislation on the tariff question. Manufacturers and dealers: have car‘ried no more stock than was absolutel y néc*
essary. Now that a Tariff bill has been
passed and has gone into operation, business
may proceed on safe line, and will naturally
expand through removal of the weight. of
suspense and doubt that has so long depressed all branches of industry.
‘But, I regret to say, as a consequence of
the Democratic tarifflegislation, there must
inevitably be large reductions of wages in
the manufacturing industries’ affected
Manufacturers and producers throughout
the East, who have been partially or wholly
deprived of protection, declare that the only
way in which they can meet cheap foreign
competition is by reduction of wages. Either
this or they must go out of business. And
no doubt this reduction of wages will extend
to the Pacific Coast.
“I was told by New England -manufacturers that wages must be reduced from 20 to
33 per cent to compensate for the tariff reductions.
:
‘dn various other important respects the
original Wilson bill has been mitigated, but,
as I have said, it is‘bad enough as it stands.
It seems tu me, as regards the political outlook in California, “tat if the le are
mindful. of their real interests, afid if they
have watched the course of the Democratic
* Administration and of thé Democratic party
in Congress, the prospects for Republican
victory in November must be decidedly
bright.”

FAMILY HANDWRITING.
Experts Say All of a Generation Have the
Ss Characeteristi
Experts in handwriting say that all
the people of a’single generation write
alike, and it is well known that most
French handwriting has astrong family
likeness to the eyes of others than
Frenchmen. Nearly all Chinamen of
the washhouse class look alike tosuperficial observers, and persons unaccustomed to colored persons find, difficulty
in distinguishing one fronr another.
It weeds, however, a comparison of
two or three family photograph albums
of 30 or 80 years ago to convince men
and women of today that there are strik. ’
ing ° superficial likenesses running
through Americans of a given generation. All these old &lbums show curious
resemblances, chiefly perhaps of dress
one family album af, first glance to be
taken for another. As page after page
of each is turned over there is the same
succession of men, women and children
in full figure, sittig, standing, posed
in groups of two _e: ‘three, with hats,
without hats, dr: in shawls, and
manifestly dressed in their best for the
occasion. . :
The phétographers’ of those .days
ghose, for reasons of their own, to make
full length pictures, and as they were
anusnally small‘costume counted: for a
great deal and helped to intensify the
general likeness running the whole gengration. Philadelphia Press.
Carnot and Jean Carries.
The death of Jean Carries, the sculptor, recalls an anecdote in which he and
the late President Carnot were tke principal. actors. The artist’s busts and
figures at the Champ de Mars excited the
admiration of all, and they were deservedly classed in the first rank. M.
Carnot, when on his visit to the salon,
noticed an old man, who seemed much
)fiioved on seeing him, standing before
the works of art of the sculptor. Some
one said to the president, after pointing
out the artist: ‘Here is need for reparation, M. le President. Carries is one}
of our most skillful men of art, and he
is not yet. decorated.’’ Forthwith M.
Carnot detached from the buttonhole of
one of the officers of the military household in the place of a cross of the chevalier a cross of an officer of the Legion
of Honor and placed it himself on the
breast of Jcan Carries. The next day,
in The Officiel, the artist was named a
chevalier of the order.—London F igaro.
Stanford's Retort,
Once Senator Stanford was traveling
through California in his private “car.
The traif had stopped at a small town,
and the senator was leisurely strolling
back and forth on the platform at ‘the
depot. A baggagemanp was nnloading .
trunks, and in doing so carelessly pitched
one onto the platform; and it burst
open. The senator looked at it and rebaggageman impudently asked, “Do you
own this trunk?’’
quickly, ‘‘No, young, man,
this road. ’’—Horseman. ae

No Better Medicine,
and have induced many to use it.
“ Thirty-five years ago this Spring, I was
run down by hard work-and a succession of
colds, which made me so feeble that it was
an effort for me tg walk. I consulted the
doctors, but kept sinking lower until I had
given up all hope of ever being better.
Happening to be in a store, one day, where
medicines were sold, the proprietor noticed
my weak and sickPy appearance, and, after
a°few questions as to my health, recommended me to try Ayer’s Pills. I had little
faitlf in these or any other medicine, but
concluded, at last, to take his advice and try
a box. Before I had used them all,-I was
very much better, and two boxes cured me.I am now 80 years old; but I. believe that
if it had not been for Ayer’s Pills, I should
have been in my grave long ago. I buy 6
boxes every year, which make 210 boxes up
to this time, and I would no more be without them than without bread.’’"—H. H.
