The Kind of a Man Who is Blood Thirsty
For Free Silver,
The Jackson, (Amador county) Ledger goes for Chas. D. Lame as follows:
Chas. D. Lane, chairman of the National Silver Party, has over his signature issued an address on the cause of
the Silver Campaign, from the head
quarters of the Campaign” Committee
in the Balwin hotel, San Francico.
The addréss claims to favor. free coin‘age of silver at 16 to 1, to oppose the
refunding of the railread debt and to
oppose menopolies. The ©. D. Lane,
whose name the document. bears is the
same C. D. Liane, who with Alvinza
Hayward, owns and controls the mining industry of the town of Angels
Camp in Calaveras county.
“The committee feels that the drank
mass of the people of California is opposed to the exactions of certain great . .
corporations which have led and are .
still leading the movenient for class
legislation, to the detriment of the
producing toilers.”
In ail probability when Mr. Lane put
his name to the address he considered
thatthe above words referred to the
Southern Pacific railroad company and
we presume they do, but how does the
conduct of his Utica Mining Company
différ from that of the, railroad. After
mentioning how the conference of silver advocates was called into-existance,
‘. the address says:
“Out of that conference grew this
Campaign Committee—a committee entirely non partisan, with but one aim—
the triumph of silver and the plain
people,—of the masses over such corporations as enter politics to debauch
them,—of right over wrong.”
Mr. Lane probably feels that having
penned his name to the address which
contains these words, he has absolved
himself and his Utica Mining Company
from all sins of commission and. omission which may have been a triumph of
the rich mine owner over the plain people, who labor for the Lane—Hayward
companies.
The great mining enterprise of
Angels is conducted on a large scale
and many men are employed, hardly
one of whom can say his soul is his own,
They all have to deal at the company
store. The company owns the water
and light plants ofihetown. Lane and
Hayward, the owners are monopolists,
as bold and exacting as any railroad or
other corporation can be, but of course
with a lesser number of people to suffer
by their monopolistic tendencies. This:
but goes to show that the greatest. antimonopolists for political purposes, if
given an opportunity in his private
business affairs, will be worse than the
worst. The manner in which the. business of the mine and. the businesses depending on the mining industry of
age Camp i is conducted, would lead
man of the National ‘Bilver Party is
actuated. in his fight for silver, .by
something niore to him than the good
of the people, something more profitable to C.D. Lane than the TRIUMPH OF
THE MASSES OVER SUCH CORPORATIONS AS
ENTER POLITICS TO DEBAUCH THEM.

Knew All About Women.
“Want me to contribute’ to the Woman’s League, do you?” asked Mr, Oldbach, queruously.
_ “Yes, sir,” said the fair solicitor.
“What is the object of mt league
madam?”
“To rescue fallen women ae to—”
“To rescue fallen women yes. You
‘never rescue men. But when something goes wrong, there’s always a woman in the case. Wasn't it Eve tempted Adam? Isn’t it woman that’s responsible for the new woman? Did
you ever see a stepmother that wasn’t
a woman? Wasn’t the. school ma’am
that used to spank me a woman?”
At this point great drops of sweat
were on Mr. Oldbach’s face, and he was
compelled to stop for. breath. The solicitor thought she saw an opportunity”
to corner him, and asked:
“Wasn’t your mother a woman, Mr.
Oldbach?”
“Of course she was. She’s
for my existeticé and
misery.”
