Historical Notes, 1855
By H. P. DAVIS
The NEVADA DEMOCRAT in
its issue of January 3, 1855, .in
reviewing the progress made during the previous year, ealled attention to the steadily increasing
substitution of population, the
substantial residences’ and busimess houses for’ the ramshackle
“old shells’? of the early days, and
prophesied that within a year the
walue of the brick building, then
estimated at $92,000 would be
quadrupled.
fi
Among: other interesting data
presented in this article was, as
or January~1;°1855, the following:
Number of families resident in
the city limits, 156; total number
of occupied houses’ 907;Churehes
3; hotels and boarding houses 24;
mercantile houses 98; banking
houses 4; retail iquor houses 73;
jewelers 2, and drug stores, 8. The
professions were represented by
18 .attorneys at law, 15. practicing
physicians and 3 dentists.
“The marriageable v-young ladies’, said this scribe apparently
without any unworthy implication, “haveincreased to double
the (size and) number as, published in the GOLDEN ERA some
six months ago, and there is still
room for more.”

There will remain some construction work, after that date,
but the NID board has agreed to
let the work lie until summer.
when the board will undertake its
completion under a supplementary agreement with the company.
The construction work remaining
will not interfere with the use
of the dam.
Forest Varney, manager of the
irrigation district stated that
there are now approximately 17,

The Grass Valley Sportsmen's
Club has queried the board regarding the possibility of obtaining a campsite. The application
was taken under advisement.
