Wonder to what an extent the observances of Easter caught the momentary attention of our minds and to what an extent they impressed the heart and conscience. Truly, we are a mecurial people, but no doubt the celebration of certain memorable days keeps us from loosing the light which shines from the star of destiny and possibly something seen or heard. may lead us to long for the coming of spring to a cold and wintry world. In America we have numerous days which, if celebrated in the right spirit, might. impress useful lessons of faith, courage and hope upon us, so indelibly, that our future days might prove of. greater worth to ourselves and those about us. In reviewing the lives arid characters of our own national heroes, we find noble examples of self sacrifice and devotion to duty and all down through the ages, there will be found no dearth of inspiring memories which are as beacon lights upon the forward way. At the present time, the world lacks leadership; but we hope that the coming days, even though clouded by political strife, may develop the proper leadership and that we who help in their selection may have the good sense to stand with them and uphold the principals upon which our nation is established. We hope that from the welter of confusion, distrust and fear which now prevails in a distraught world, leaders may arise in this and other lands and that they may be men of vision, courage and devotion, together with the ability needed for the solution of the grave prob. /¥ lems with which they are surrounded. It is indeed time to pray, ‘God give us men.” 1 Wonder why so many people of seeming importance are busily engaged in fomenting fear and distrust in the minds of their followers. There are so many frightened people in our land today and every day there are more scare headlines*in the newspapers and we get another attack of the jitters. We wish the powers that be, would explain foreign plans and domestic issues so that we. the frightened ones, might take courage and go marching on. Shakespeare once wrote, ‘‘in the night imagining some fear, how easy is a bush supposed a bear.” Too true, . remember that years ago . had an experience which proves Mr. Shakespeare's assertion. Yes, . thought a bush was something exciting and was properly humiliated when I discovered its harmlessness. Just now, Remembering that circumstances of past yearsgl’m wishing that a little flock of whales would not swim within sight of our mainland Why can’t submarines of unknown origin, be located off the Atlantic coast? . think because the sightseers knew that if frightened, the people of eastern cities and towns would take flight to the western coast and there would be a dangerous shifting of population. He can scare us Californians till we fancy we are seeing submarines in every river and stream, but we won't run, we'll stay here and be scared rather than fly for safety to the east. “Pooh, pooh,” said the small boy who heard fearsome noises as he was walking home through the woods one dark night, “‘pooh, pooh, that’s nothing but noise. ‘‘Let’s follow his example, Let's say, -Not every spouting whale and floating tub Pooh, pooh, in our Pacific sea, Can rightfully be called a sub. .
