PICTURED AT THE TOP is Mark E. Petersen, Salt Lake City, member of
the Quorum of 12 of the Church of the Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ,
who will delivery the dedicatory address Sunday evening at the new $75,000
chapel of the Grass Valley Ward of the Mormon church. The church was
completely built by members of the congregation, right from the felling of
the logs, laying the foundation and the actual construction work. Directly
below Petersen is a picture of the completed church on Alta hill, Grass Valley.
Pictured at the right-four stages of construction of the building. The actual
construction .of the building was under the foremanship of Charles C. Staley
and William A. Wright with Jess Michelson assisting. Bishop Ralph A. Greenwell was the guiding light that conducted the congregation through the long
hard task of building the church and the building is a monument to his and
the congregation’s endeavors.

the Lord? or who hath been his
counsellor?” (11:34).

Thomas L. Carter was first
bishop of the*Grass Valley ward
when it was organized in January, 1935, originally as the Nevada City branch. Five families
formed the ward and met in the
home of Sadie Keller.
A building was planned and
in 1939 a lot on Mill street in
Grass Valley was purchased for
that purpose. The war started
people to moving and start of
construction was postponed.
Angus C. Fox served as bishop
after . _November, 1941,° when .
Bishop Carter left the ward.
Bishop Fox carried on the work
of the ward during the difficult
time of the war when population
was rapidly shifting.
Greenwell was ordained bishop
in January, 1946, following his
release from the U. S. army, during which time he served as a
combat engineer in the European
theater.
With the war over, the building was given first consideration
again by the congregation. A final selection of a plan for the
church indicated the Mill street
lot was insufficient in size and
sold.
The lot on which the new
chapel stands was_ purchased
from Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mulcahy in April,. 1947, and construction commenced the following July.
Thirteen months later construction, except for landscaping of
the grounds, was completed. All
work on the church was done
by members of the congregation.
Staley and Wright served as foremen and Mickelson was their assistant.
Bishop Greenwell expressed
Satisfaction for the. healthy
growth of the church from its
original five families to a current 350.
