quitos in the summer season, and during the daytime,
Boots had an idea. “‘Why waste fifteen cents a night on
beds?’’, he said. “Let's pick out a good warm haystack
and sleep in it.’ So that afternoon we picked out a
#~@ likely looking stack, and after dark we walked out of
town, and crawling through a fence, we settled ourselves down in the hay for a nap. Half starved and cold
—for the night air was bitter still—I dozed off, and
so did my comrades.
It must have been after midnight when some one

Veterans Administration officials estimate four out of five veteran widows who are. suddenly
faced with the necessity of filing
claims for pensions
selves unable to lay hands immediately upon, copies of public
records necessary to establish the
claims. :
find themOne of the most important
steps a married veteras or serviceman can take to protect his
wife and children in case of his
death is to place on file a certified copy of the public record of
certified records of previous marriages of himself and wife. Copies
of birth certificates of any children should also be obtained.
Many a tragic delay in settling
the pension claim’ of a veteran’s
widow has resulted because the
widow or her dead husband had
been married previously and adequate proof of the dissolution of
that marriage was produced only
after a long and painful search.
There is the case of an army
officer who was killed in the Pacific. His widow filed a claim for
pension with the Veterans Administration. The officer’s army
record showed he had been married before to another woman,
but there was no indication the
marriage had been dissolved.
Before the widow's claim can
be settled, the VA must trace
down the facts of that previous
marriage to make sure it was dissolved and the widow was legally
his death. This may mean searching the records in each county
in which the officer lived during
his first marriage.
Veterans and service mén owe
it to their loved onés to insure
that necessary records are readily
available in case of death.
Question: What supporting evie
dence -must be furnished by a
widow or child in order to claim
a death pension?
Asswer: Proof of legal relationship of widow (marriage and dissolution of prior marriages of
both spouses) and proof of legal
relationship of child or acknowledgement of child by veteran.
Question: May death pension
be paid to a widow who has remarried?
Answer: NogShe loses al] status
as a widow of her previous husband upon remarriage.
Question: Why is it necessary
to submit proof of legal relationNevada City-Grass Valley Nugget, August 26, 1948—%
my husband’s military service records? :
Answer: The statement on military records is not considered
sufficient evidence for a court of
law. No investigation is made
by the military of legality of the
marriage or legal dissolution of
previous marriages, either of yourself or your husband. These facts
must be established by authenti_
cated copies of public records.

About three o’clock-in the morning, we gave up
the struggle and came back to our stove in the saloon
to warm up. Next day we went back, chastened, to
our fifteen cent bunks.
As a long shot in the dark, I had written to one of
/ «my house brothers who was. staying for summer session in Berkeley, and reminded him that he owed me
ten dollars, and if ever he was to pay it, now was the
time.
When that money came in, it was salvation, and
we ate our first good meal since leaving camp. No
answer had come from Tonopah, and we made up our
minds we would go home to Berkeley and make a
fresh start for the summer, nearer home. Not one of
us would have lowered himself to write home to our
parents for money, so the only possible route was to
hobo our way.
