State Fair To Feature Fire Fighting Contest SACRAMENTO: Adding to the Centennial atmosphere at the California State Fair, at Sacramento, September 2 through 12, two honorary fire companies will fight fires the same way earlier members of the companies did nearly a century ago in the Mother Lode country. Ned Green, secretary-manager of the Fair, announced today that Columbia will send ‘Old Papette’’, the oldest piece of fire fighting equipment in the state still in use, into competition with another hand pumper manned by a fire company from San Andreas. Columbia’s fire company, which was formed in 1850 and is credited with being the oldest company in active service in the state, challenged the San Andreas company to a fire-fighting contest, and the acceptance was prompt and belligerent. The two companies will ‘vie at putting out a fire which will be started in a small wooden building in front of the State Fair grandstand. Columbia’s hand-pumper was acquired in 1852 and is still equipANNOUNCE APPROACH Drivers should be. heard if not seen on mountain roads, particularly when approaching a blind eurve. The engine was built in Boston, Mass., and was sent by Clipper Ship around the horn to San Francisco in 1852, enroute to the Sandwich Islands, for use by Papeete, king of the Islands. Gold Rush shipping schedules were irregular, and after. several months delay, San Francisco Fire Chief Scanlon decided Columbia needed the equipment more than King Papeete did, He authorized its sale to th Mother Lode city, which hong¢ the king by naming the pumphy “Old Papeete.’’ The San pumper also is nearly a century old.
