and the bad ones,
The studious and the thoughtful too,
ef the modern child, and make such sweeping assertions
about him. Of course the modern child is in many
ways different to the models that prevailed in our
childhood days. There were no movies, radios, no auto
mobiles. Our parents were not addicted to cocktail
parties and we heard little of “‘juvenile delinquency.”
+ The immaculate children of other days were
taught to be seen, not heard, today the child is encouraged to speak his mind and sometimes pearls of wisdom
fall from his.lips. Let’s‘remember that he is the product
of his home and his school; his world is no more like
the world of long ago than black is like white. Of one
thing we may be sure, the modern child can not be
explained by sweeping generalities; to paraphrase an
old line, he is “‘good and bad, he is weak and strong,
“wise, foolish and so were we.”
;
Once in the days before the first world war, a
California journalist placed his pen to paper and wrote,
“they say that the modern child does not respect his
elders; well, when . look at some of the elders, durned
if I blame ’em.”’ Yes, indeed, the irrepressible youngster, who had no regard for the opinions of his elders,
existed in the “‘good old days’’ and the boys and girls
of all life's yesteryears, were good or bad as the case
might be. Perhaps some of our predjudiced opinions
of children of today, are explained by the fact that, in
our passing days, the errors of childhood are well advertised, while the good children and their deeds, too
often pass unnoticed.
It might be well to recall our own childhood days
and think for a time of mischievous acts committed
by the children we used to know. After all we were
not perfect—far from it. ‘What do you think of a ten
ear old boy who broke into a house?” said a dear
iend to me but a few days ago. ‘‘Oh,”’ I replied, ‘‘when
IJ was a sweet young thing of seven years, I and my
eight year old boy cousin broke into a house. To be
sure it was a vacant house, but we broke in. You see,
someone told us that the house was haunted and we
wanted to see what made a ghost tick.’
Look back into those halcyon days of old. I ven
