8—The, Nevada City Aa Friday, August 5, 1949 RUSSIA COULD. FIELD ARMY OF 20 MILLION MEN (continued from page 1) They are organized into the army, navy, air force and MVD se curity troops. The strength of the army—the ground forces—is about 3,500,000. It is the largest peacetime stand ing army in the world. Behind the mobilized first line fighting force there are large masses of trained reserves. Using these reserves Russia can quick ly mobilize and maintain in the field an army of over 29,000,000 men. Such a force Russia maintained during the last war. The improveme nt in the Soviet. economic situation due to victory and the expansion of her war. potential by the current 5 year plan makes the maintenance of 25,000,000 armed forces easier now than during World War II. The navy is the best trained and disciplined of Russia’s fighting forces. It is, however, small and inefficient in comparison with the navies of the U. S. or Great Britain. The main strength of the Russian navy is its submarines of which there are several hundred. Many German naval experts are being used by the Russians to improve the valUe ol tacir submarines and other ships. The Russian navy, however could not prevent a strong ‘hostile fleet from landing troops on her Black Sea or far eastern coasts. Greater improvement has been shown ‘in the Russian air force since the end of World War ‘II than in’ any other Russian fi¢ht ing arm. The improvement started immediately after the war and has continued to date. Stalin and the other top Communist leaders have given their personal attention to the reorganization, reequipping and Tetraining of the air force. During the war:the Soviet air force was used primarily as an auxiliary of the ground forces to which it was closely tied both organically. and tactically. After the war Stalin. and the other members: of. the Politburo saw the great. destruction lor obably the largest (in numbers) of any other force. The Russian MVD security troops are identical -in’ purpose to the SS troops of Hitler. ‘The strength of their force is about 500,000. men. They are or bombing force was devei . the uniforms, housing, arms and equipment of any of the other armed forces. They are the pets of Stalin. t is not the great size of the Russian armed forces which make'them a menace to world oeace. The danger is.in the character of the Russian. officers and afficials. The loot and rape of Europe during and after the war has made these Russians _ rich, but it has fired their desire for more wealth. All ranks of the Russian fighting forces look forward to the day when, they can’ again. loot and rape the capitalist world. In next Friday’s Nugget I shall tell how the Soviet regime is. menacing the capitalist world. FOLSOM COMES HERE SUNDAYFOR LAST GAME to Velie: “On that affect ure in 1948.
