ITINERANT CHISELERS
A:persistent pest is the chiseler who travels into small
communities and takes advantage of the accessibility and
good nature of local business people. They invariably
wish to speak to the “‘boss’’ and once they have his ear,
open up with a barrage of reasons for the proprietor to
shell out some hard earned cash. °
These out-of-town solicitors are usually well trained. .
They have such a-convicing argument that one feels like
a piker to refuse them.
The adoption of a strict policy of asking the out-of.
town solicitor to obtain a written okay for his efforts
from the Chamber of Commerce will avoid embarrass.
ment and wil! save loczl merchants thousands of dollars
a year. This chamber-approved solicitation idea has been
relieving business people of needless time and expenditure waste in large centers and is one of the main reasons
the chiseler is working more persistently in smaller com‘ .

ENGLE LAKE
Recently the Placerville Mountain Democrat started
a campaign to honor Congressman Clair Engle for his
work in the House of Representatives and particularly
his work on the Folsom dam bill by naming the resulting
-. impounded water Engle Lake.
We think if is an excellent suggestion and a proper
method of honoring a man still living and very active.
Clair Engle has done his work well in the congress.
A customer often asks’ us how long it takes to become
a “good” printer. We couldn't tell, as we've only spent
20 years trying to become one.
The really sophisticated people of today are staying

One man in a thousand is a leader of men—the others
follow women.
You can fool many people all the time . . . and how
the rogues profit from that fact!

Q
Our hearts go home at Christmas time—that is if we
‘are old enough to have left the old home behind and to
~ . have known and realized the conflicting confusions of the
. present. I recall the days before World War One and
find many gracious memories of days when the world
which was mine knew nothing of fear and uncertainty.
Home was a haven of peace, life was beautiful and the
world a fair and wonderful place in which to spend one’s
years.
If democracy had met a deadly challenge, . did not
know it; there were no atomic bombs, no deadly missiles
'screaming through the air at unbelievable rates of speed,
‘no one feared the skies above, the ocean held no mneace.
. ] wonder if life will ever be like that again.
If we are to believe all that we see and hear, fear is .
rampant in the world of today, and that fear is fed daily
iby startling revelations, by boasts of unimagined power
in the hands of relentless foes, by descriptions of appalling accidents and death threats from seemingly inéurable
diseases. Little children who have not the philosophic
‘standpoint upon which to rest are made afraid and that
‘fact is tragic.
. But Christmas comes with its yuletide joys, and for a
. time we may turn from the surging, striving, quarrelsome
world about us and breathe the air of peace and good will
that comes to many of us from the shores of our yesteryears, from the homes we once knew and from the dear
ones whose memories linger there.
This is indeed the season of peace and good will and
we may in great measure shut out the world which at
other times “is too much with us,” gather about our own
hearth stones, with our loved ones and let the Christmas
spirit have its way with us from dawn to dawn.
I wish our emotions of fear, doubt, suspicion and unbelief were not so well fed; . wish we were not so constantly reminded by our newspapers and radios of all
that is wrong with the world. It can’t be all bad, you
know. Why not pay more attention to that which is
right with the world in which we live and refrain at least
for a time from purveying so much information concerning people and events which in some cases are almost unthinkable >
Dreams come true—they always have and they always
will; dreams of peace and good will have shone in upon
the hearts and minds of men ever since the world was
invented and somewhere, somehow there will be found
.fulfillment. Fires die down when they are not fed, hatred fades. when the light of understanding reveals its
true nature; how much can we, just you and . contribute
to the peace and understanding of this troubled world?
To what extent ‘is it within our power to quench the
flames of ill will and bring about a time when the Christ/mas spirit will remain throughout the glad New Year, and
go with us into a fair and desirable future? .
Let us welcome the Christmas spirit with true enthusiasm; let us celebrate the yuletide season with the spirit
and the understanding.
Peace upon earth, Good Will to men!
The song rings out across the years; *
Putting our anxious doubts to flight,
Calming and comforting our fears.
May the Spirit of Christmas perform its blessed mission
in every heart and may it remain to perform its heavenly
missions through all the New Year that is to be.

“Is the Universe, Including
Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?”
This question is the subject of
the Christian Science lesson-sermon for Sunday. The golden text
is taken from Jeremiah: “Ah
Lord. God! behold, thou hast
made the heaven and the earth
by thy great power and stretched
out arm, and there is nothing too
hard for thee” (32:17).
Among the citations from the
Bible and from “Science and
Health With Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy that
will comprise the sermon are the
following:
Isaiah: ‘For, behold, I create
and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
But be ye glad and-rejoice for
ever in that which I create: for,
behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy”
(65:17, 18).
“Advancing spiritual steps in
the teeming universe, of Mind
. lead on to spiritual spheres and
exalted beings. To material sense
this divine universe is dim and
distant, gray in the sombre hues
of twilight; but anon the veil is
lifted, and the scene shifts into
light” (p. 513).
