af Saal — Mrs. Margaret Trivelpiece, Reporter, Telephone 106, ‘University Women to FOR YOUR Give Yule Party at Walker Home Dec. 14 Annual Christmas party of Nevada County Branch, American Association of University Women, will be held Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Kent Walker, Zion street. Mrs. Walker is program chairman. Christmas music will feature the party and will be presented by the Nevada City high school chorus under the direction of William Tobiassen. Participating in the program are Joan Oje, Lillie Sassamon, Patricia Sturtevant, Elizabeth Wilson, Ruth Estes, Georganne Behrbaum, Gloria Larson, Patricia Burgin, Joann Scott, Richard Penroes, Kent Walker,. James Branson, and Larry Parsons. Mrs. Stanley Hornberger heads the refreshments committee. The afternoon section of the association will be held the following day at the home of Mrs. A. T. Parsons, Banner mountain road. Mrs Parsons is chairman of the section which specializes in current events and book réviews. Mrs. George A. Legg will review “The Romance of Mining,” by T. A. Rickard. A resume of recent events will be given by Mrs. E. M. Litke. The new section is the only one of the AAUW which meets afternoons. Other groups and _ their chairmen are: International Relations, Miss Helen Chapman: So¢ial Studies, Mrs. Richard Harris; Creative Arts, Mrs. J. Roger Snipe; and Bridge, Mrs. Robert Ingram. Mrs. Robert Stuart to Head Columbia NDGW Mrs. Roberta Stuart was chosen president of Columbia Parlor No. 70, French Corral, at a meeting Friday in French Corral. Other officers’ chosen were Mrs. Margaret Madden, past president; Mrs. Ethyle Saunders, first . vice president; Mrs. Phyllis Butz, second vice president; Mrs. Alta Atchinson, third vice president; Mrs. Lucy Kneebone, financial secretary and_ treasurer; Mrs. Fannie Moulton, secretary; Mrs. . Adele ‘Browning, marshall; Mrs. Sara Reeder, Mrs. Emma Proom, Mrs. Leslie Schwartz, trustees; Mrs. Lois Butz, inside sentinel; Miss Theresa O’Connor, outside sentinel. ; Installation of officers will be held at the Friday, Jan. 6, meeting. “ Lilli Sassamon Queen Of High School Dance Miss Lillie Sassamon, junior student at Nevada. City high school, was chosen @ queen to rule over the Masque Grotesque at the high school gymnasium on Friday evening. The dance was conducted . by the 50 Club, composed of seniors who will graduate in 1950. Ed Havey, president of the class, was in charge of the coronation ceremonies. Prizes for outstanding costumes went to Jenell Stinchfield and Peter Scribner in the couple competition. Prize for best: individual costume was given: to Jean Griggs. Clarence Noonan, 70, brother of Mrs. Claude Clark, Nevada City, died Thursday, last week, while visiting in Richmond. He was a lifetime resident of Weaverville, where funeral services were held Monday. New Troop of Brownies Formed in Gold Flat First meeting of a new, Brownie Troop was held Tuesday afternoon at the Gold Flat elementary school, with Mrs. M. George Bissell, leader, welcoming 15 girls into Scouting. Donna Joyce Stevenson was named Chief Brownie; Patricia Coleman, secretary; and Donna Granholm, treasurer. Other members are Marilyn Michell, Jane March, Thoris Hollaway, Judith Ann Chernoh, Jean Aaronson, Audrey Stunkel, Kathryn Halstead, Wanda Wright, Charlene Jones, Mary Kitts and Julia Tyler. . Next week’s meeting at the school will be used as a project for making Christmas .gifts for lonely persons at the hospitals. The following meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Mrs. Bissell’s home, Banner road, as a Christmas lunch party. Five cents a week was set as dues at: Tuesday’s meeting. Christmas Party Held By Ridge Garden Club The Ridge Road Garden club held its December meeting Tues. day at the home of Mrs. Mae . Raddue. . Red fir boughs covered with cones were arranged in the hall and over the mantel of the fireplace. A Christmas ball tree with blue and silver ornaments, surrounded by. snow men and white reindeer adorned the buffet. Red berries and six red tapers in crystal completed the Christmas motif. Cambersticks were served before dessert luncheon. Gifts were exchanged and one gift was donated for a “Pig in a Poke” auction. The club is sponsoring a Christmas basket complete with turkey to give to a needy family. Some clothing was donated to add to the package. Mrs. R. N. Crowell, daughter of Mrs. Raddue, Sacramento, was a guest at the meeting. Rev. Pearson to Talk To PTA This Afternoon Rev. George C. Pearson, pastor of the local Methodist church, will speak on “Christmas in a Changing World” before the Nevada City High School ParegntTeachers association this afterroom of the high schoel. . Willard Goerz, music ‘chairman 'and school band teacher, will . present special music. Refresh;ments will be served by Mrs. . Margaret Newby, Home Making , teacher, hostess. The food to be served will be prepared by her boys’ cooking class. Mrs. Hazel Estes, president of . the association, extends a cordial . invitation to all parents and . friends to attend this meeting. Ned Smith Honored by . ji . Faculty and Friends . Ned Smith, who retired as cus. todian of the Nevada City high school on Dec. 1, was honored Tuesday evening at a surprise dinner party by friends and faculty members. The dinner .was prepared and served by members of the high school cafteria class. Smith started work at the high school in 1941 and was very popular with the students and faculty. Faculty members presented him with a gift at the dinner. Christmas themed the tables, decorated by the cafeteria class. noon at 2:30 o’clock in the sewing . Christmas Formal of —— Mr. and Mrs. Club Tomorrow Night “Christmas Formal” is theme of the yule dance of the Mr. and Mrs. Club at Grass Valley Elks hall tomorrow night. The club is composed of young! married couples of Nevada City and Grass Valley. George and Marjorie Raddue. are in charge of the affair—the only formal dance of the year conducted by the club. As a feature of the party each member has been asked to’ bring one can of food for the Mr. and Mrs. Club Basket to the Grass Valley Donation day parade. Posse-Ettes to Honor Children December 20 A children’s Christmas party will be held by the Nevada .Coun. ty Posse-Ettes at the club room of the Gold Nugget Inn Tuesday, Dec. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. Final arrangements for the holiday party were made at Tuesday evening’s meeting of the organization.
