They should keep interested in the’ present instead of living: in the past. c . Religion is he most powerful , source of consolation to the aged. They realize that life’s little day is drawing~to a close, that the, shadows” are thickening about , them, that soon the curtain of ‘eternal night must fall from them, If they can say with he Psalmist “I know that my redeemer iiveth,”’ and like Paul rejoice that his Master gained the victory over death, and because of that, “at the last day the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,’ then ‘death shall be swallowed up in victory.’’ In patience and. serenity, with calm, contented souls, await the ringing curtain: on ‘this
rall life.’’ The deeds and words of loving coun-’: sel and encouragement will fall fever that Ticklers By George On the a SCREE “Joan of Arc’”’ In this film, there is being shown what is probably, pictorially, ohe ‘of the most magnificent spectacles offered by the cinema since the advent of Technicolor. The particular period of history—France during 1412-1431, lends itself to pageantry, especially when following the career of he Maid of Orleans. Starring Ingrid Bergman, who had the same role on Broadway_in “Joan of Lorraine,’’ this presentation of the historic Joan is im’ the classical, or romantic, tradition, of all story-book stories about. Joan. She first appears as a farm girl at Domremyy, who hears ‘‘heavenly voices’ ‘which commanded her to go to the Dauphin of France and plead to lead his armies, such as they were, against the English and the forces of the Duke of Burgundy. Subsequently, there is depicted the amazing result of Joan’s recruiting campaign, the shock .of the battle of Orleans, the brilliance of making the weak and ungrateful prince the king of France, the capture of the heroine and her subsequent martyrdom., Miss Bergman is remarkable as Joan, Jose Ferrer, as the Dauphin, making his Hollywood debut, dominates’ emphatically every ‘scene in which he appears and, Francis L. Sullivan does the same . as the Bishop of Beauvis. -Others y upon the heart like a benediction, who give excellent performances are J. Carrol Naish, Ward Bond, John Emory, Cecil Kellaway’ and Alan Napier. “Shockproof”’ This is the story of a young woman (Patricia Knight), who “killed someone—why she. did. it is never explained—and is out on parole after serving five years of her sentence. She is put into the custody of Cornel Wilde, impersonating a parole officer, who immediately falls in love with her and marries her, which is apparently against the law in California. After she puts a bullet into a gambler, they have to flee to Mexico, where they can’t live in peace. .So‘they return to California, confess their sins and, amazingly. get off scot free. 1.
