Just Wonderin’
] Wonder why the clever man
We call our favorite newscaster
Regales us almost every day
With murder, fire and dire disaster;
Sweet bells are jangled out of tune,
Mankind is groping through the fog,
And so amid earth’s raucous sounds
The daily news is, “‘man bites dog.”
-: . ] Wonder if we often place undue blame upon those
who bring us the daily news. After the close of the war,
we hoped to read and hear the sounds of peace; the
soft swish of an olive branch and the gentle cooing of
a dove. Such things were not to be. This is an open
season for our kind and the detailed accounts of world
tribulations do not make good reading or good listening.
There was a time which many of us remember when
war's alarms seemed far away; there might be a revoJution in South America or a squabble of some sort in
“lands across the sea; but the sounds and effects of battle did not touch our quiet shores, neither were they a
part of our daily conversations; now, murder, fire and
sudden death prevail on every hand. A ship goes down
at sea, a plane crashes and there is great loss of life in
“both incidents, the crimson tide of war is rising still
and our reporters and radio newscasters are burdened
with the task of keeping all-records straight and telling
an avid public of each and every new disaster.
Let’s try to understand and appreciate the work of the
busy men and women who bring us the news. They are
as tired of bad news as we are and perhaps if we evidenced more interest in the brighter side of life, they
-would mingle the dark with the light; but we are a sen-sation loving people and if there is anything of the terrible and macabre anywhere or at any time, we want to
know all about it.
The gentle soul who said, “the world is to much
with us,” had neither seen nor heard anything. There
“were no radios in his time, no Jightning means of com.
munication; the world was a monstrous place and what
happened in some remote part of it, was like an echo,
or a dream. Now we are not only in the world, we are
in the maelstrum of its confusion and strife and there
are no cyclone cellars that offer escape.
The over worked purveyors of news will have heavy
tasks this year and we must brace ourselves and prepare to brave the storm as ‘it gathers and breaks upon
us. Weare in the wrack of the storm, part of it in fact
and while we hope for those better world conditions
which may come, let us not forget the tasks of making
our own decisions and forming our home made poli_ tical problems. Our duty as world citizens and as citizens of our own U.S. A. will keep us alert for months
to come, we'll just have to wake up and take all in our
stride.
~~ Uncle Silas says; “‘this world is like a very small
apple; too little to be devided.”

REPRESENTATIVE _When Ed Carey started making a
model of the “Flying Cloud,” it was
only to rest his eyes from reading.
But now he: spends every spare
moment ship modelling!
Some wives might have resented
a husband suddenly shutting himself in the attie every night. But
not Ed’s Prudence. When she found
him working late, she brought him
up some beer and crackers..
showed a real interest in his hobby
.. until finally Ed had her helping

working side by side on Ed's bench,
sharing a common interest. Instead
of keeping them apart, Ed’s hobby
brought them more together.
_ From where I sit, a husband’s
hobby ean often be a wife’s as well.
In fact, I’ve got the missus interested in tying trout flies—and,
along with that mellow glass of
beer, it makes the evenings go by
mighty pleasantly.— at ce
