* * GOLD DIGGER’S FRAIL * *
(Continued from Page 5)
after, . would come to Nevada City and live in contentment with my beloved wife and six children.
EDUCATION
Though all true San Franciscans hate to admit
it, there was a slight earthquake before the Great
Fire in their city. . know this is so ‘because a chimney
fell down outside my window along about five in the
morning. Even in those days that was enough to awaken
me.
It was a large chimney an it woke everyone else
in the house too. My bed—a steel wire cot—shook
sharply end for end and the typewriter skated giddily
on the table. My room mate, Cal Haffey, was of a
nature far more sensitive than mine. He arose and
looked out the window across the street at-a sorority
house whose top windows were full of beautiful and
terrified young ladies all in their nighties. A genial
*‘yoo-hoo” from him sent them, scurrying for cover.
This, remember, was in the year nineteen hundred
and six.
A faint ‘‘oski’’ sounded down the street, to be
taken up by others, louder, nearer, as fraternity houses
and student boarding places joined the chorus. One
lad rushed out clad only in a short gym shirt and
started down the street. In a minute he was trying
to hide behind a two inch scantling in the frame of an
unfinished garage.
{ was sleepy, but practical minded. “Take time
off from piping the gals to put my typewriter on the
floor,” . directed, and turned over for another nap as
soon as the bed was quiet and the shock ‘was over.
About seven, . woke up again. Every man in
the house was crowding for a place at our window,
which faced across the bay toward San Francisco.
Clouds of black smoke, with pillars of flame, were
rising over the city. And for all time, old San Francisco
became “The City That Was.” ,

SEWING. A child who was
born 129 years ago today, ana
dressed infant garments all
hand sewn, was to change the
method of dressmaking and tailoring. The babe was Elias Howe,
American inventor, born in Spencer, Mass. He worked in his father’s mills. Later he wet to Lowell, where he entered a cottonmachinery manufactory. After
working two years on his idea,
he completed his invention of the
sewing machine in 1845. The machine met with opposition so he
sold his rights in England for
250 pouds sterling. Returning to
the United States, he declared
that his patent had been infringed.
Litigation followed and Howe flually won his case,

BEAUTY. Visitors to Nevada
City and the county in general,
over the holidays, saw much of
beauty. The forests and flora of
the county. The cultivated gardens
and man-made lakes. But of all
these there was not one to compare with the beauty of the Fourts:
of July Queen and her court. Our
loveliest flowers are our beautiful
young girls who grow into handsome women. Instead of wilting
and drying as the flowers do,
they become charming and gracious grandmothers.

WHISTLE. That of a happy

That of our song birds, musical
echoings of things past. Childhood
memories and folk lore. That of
a train shrill and sharp, at times
terrifying. It will be sweet music

whistling in our midst again,
though we may have to wait five
years for the familiar sound,
Think of what it will mean!
