Dr. Honzik found that about one third of the group were sucking their thumbs at the end of their second year, with evidence that the habit begins after the baby is frustrated in his need for either sucking, food, or for comfort during illness. “There is, some evidence in the study that the relationships within the homes of the thumbsuckers are unusually happy ones, Dr. Honzik said. ‘‘‘There tends to be a harmonious relationship between the parents and an_ unusually triendly attitude of the mother toward the thumbsuckig child.”’ Dr. Honzik also said that probably the greater prevalence of thumbsucking in girls than boys may be attributed to a more lenient attitude toward the girls with regard to the habit and to greater activity by boys. f Invite your friends to visit Nevada County.
