"e. = «egress convenes July 26th. If the “Senate fails to cover 5 +> ——. We mie sure’ way to kill off INKING OUT LOUD By H. M. L., SR. TH — ade Well, they’re off. All except Genry Wallace and his ridiculous guitar ' playing: side-kick. The Dixiecrats the Northern Demoerats, the Republicans, the Socialists, the Prohibitionists and the Whatnots. By which we mean the Henry Wallace party, which is just about to launch Henry: It’s a fair race, and while we are not too sure of the winner, we still believe the Republicans will win. & & We surmise that President Truman will garner a larger vote than would appear at the moment. We like the way the Democratic convention reinforced in its platform the civil rights plank, which is Truman’s, at least by adoption. It’s about time Congress fought this battle to the finish, whether it results in a long drawn out filibuster or not. We understand it will find a top place on the Republican schedule, when Conits bill for civil rights with a cloture rule, that’s too bad, but let us have the Bent and get it over with, This : the international propaganda mill that keeps repeating we are for equal rights for all peoples, creeds and races, in talk, but we do not practice our preaching. hh We think Henry Wallace will not get the vote anticipated when he first threw his hat in the ring. Too many people inthis country are fearful of giving his Communist following a boost. Nobody likes a Communist, especially since’ the Russians have tried to starve two million people in Germany, by cutting. off their food imported by the western democratic allies. e % Just why ‘we should be in this silly position of having to import food through a Russian zone to our own part of Berlin, is something hard to understand, and why we put up with it for a minute, is” another thing that baffles. One of these days one of the Russian planes cavorting over our airfields in Berlin. will collide with a British or American plane leaded with food, and then the fat will be in the fire. e % & The Russians don’t seem to have learned: yet that Americans don’t like to see their boys killed by alien warriors either at Diamond Head or over Berlin. Since we began to carry vittles to the Germans in Berlin, we must continue to do'so somehow or lose face. The Russians like the Germans so much less than we do that they are willing. to give our part of Berlin a taste of famine, just to force us out. We could. not, of course, fail the Germans —onee we undertook’ to supply most of their food. hh So hese we sit-on-tenter hocks waiting for the Russians to open the gates, which apparently -our diplomats carelessly placed in their hands. We don’t know what General Clay will say when he arrives in Washington but we hope he hag a plan that will set the Russians back on their heels. It is no joke having 10,000 American troops in a Russian bear trap Personally we would rather see all of Moscow leveled and rotting from atomic bombs than that one of our boyg should die of a Russian bullet. Y & & We do not know just why Harry Truman recalled Cong: ess. It may have been politics as the Republicans charge. At any rate we be~ lieve it was a mighty-good move ! for the president to make. We . are for it 100 per cent. Let. the Republicans put some of their fine platform planks into law, and at the same time stand by, ready for instant action abroad, in case action is necessary. e h As for Henry Wallace and the horse and buggy. South, which talks about state rights and denies its Negroes human rights, they are, strictly speaking, political sideshows, which will probably aid in laying the Democratic party on the shelf until another Roosevelt is born. And for that matter, the new heir to Roosevelt can just ag well be a Republican as Democrat. CHAMBER HEARS CRAMER ON CHANCE FOR R.R. SPUR HERE GRASS VALLEY: The Valley Chamber of Commerce rectors, meeting for breakfast cently, discussed a plan for’ creasing the membership by new -members, and adjusting dues in such manner to bring in adddi*reitonal revenue. tilbert Cramer gave a report on the recent conference held with officials of the Southern Pacific Company regarding a proposal to run a spuretrack into Nevada County. He said that the a survey officials suggested that be made to determine the age daily freight tonnage aVer= of the county.
