The mighty telescope which has been years in the making, has at length been put in place on the crest of a California mountain and is now ready to’pierce the ‘llimitable realms of space. The astronomical figures used in describing this great far seeing eye, almost stagger the imigination; the long years of patient toil consumed in its construction,,its size and weight, the tasks of moving it safely from one place to another, and finally of conveying it up the mountain over a road, especially made for the purpose, putting it in place and adjusting
the machinery which despite its enormous size and weight, moves it with a perfection of ease. Above, the number of light years through which it will permit man to peer and see the heavenly orbs as yet unknown. ‘It is a far cry from the tiny telescope of Galilleo to the monster instrument on Palomar, truly in the words of that ancient savant, ‘‘the world moves.” As in the world of science, so man’s open mindedness has increased slowly but surely through the years, superstition and religious intolerance have ceased to thwart the adventurous spirits of those who seek the truth about themselves and the universe in which they live. Knowledge is in a great degree unhampered, the human . ! . mind may roam at will. What will astronomers now learn about this _universe which is our home? Is it indeed limitless, or will they find a region of nothingness way out there, is there an iron curtain or an encircling wall that will say, “thus far and no farther shalt thou go?” Will they find aside from other solar systems probably of far greater magnitude than our own, orbs which like the earth are inhabited? Will they finally come to see the earth if its true relationship to the mighty orbs of heaven and look upon it as a mere speck of dust, turning smugly in its little orbit and knowing little of its own internal disorders or'the fury which another planet might dash over it and leave no single trace of it behind? We shall all be waiting for reports from the astronomers of Palomar and those reports will no doubt leave us breathless. What do we hope, what do we fear? What new knowledge shall we gain, what old ideas shall we be constrained to discard? > As for me, I’m truly concerned. For many a year, I have avoided the purchasing of a horoscope by declaring to horoscopic friends, that . wasn’t born under any star, but instead, under the empty place in the north. That fiction seemed to explain so many. things; some cf the horoscope venders looked at me with pity in their eyes and silently went their way; but now, what if that big glass eye on Palomar unveils stars in that empty place---many stars perhaps, big and imposing ones? Then I shall be obliged to pick for myself a red, blue or yellow star and invest in a horoscope. I’m wishing every sort of good luck to the great new telescope; no matter what it does to my little fund of knowledge and my smug preconceived ideas of time and space, may it look far and wide and may those who man it, pluck many a golden apple of knowledege from the tree of wisdom, whose branches have yielded sc much fruitage since man began to grow and use a brain.
