Business Women Will
Picnic Tomorrow At
Seaman's Lodge Here
Ruth Veale will be chairman
of the Business and Professional
Women’s Club June social meeting, and will preside over a picnic tomorrow at: 7-p.m.
The highlight of the evening
will be barbecued steaks, cooked
by her hifsband, Carles Veale.
Members are asked to bring their
own service.
Home Department To
Meet at Seaman's
Lodge Tomorrow
Nevada City Home Department will discuss house cleaning
methods at Seaman’s Lodge tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m., under the leadership of Mrs.
Frances Dunkinson, home demonstration agent. Luncheon will
be served at noon.
Women’s Club Holds ~
Pre-Vacation Meet
Nevada City Women’s Civic
Club held its pre-vacation meeting with Vice President Gertrude
Goyne presiding in the absence
of Mrs. Byron Brock, who is attending state conference of
Women’s Clubs in’ Santa Cruz
this week. Mrs. Gertrude Estes
presented a vocal solo and gave
an interesting talk on U. S.
money.
Mrs. Isobelle. Tourtelotte was
in charge of the dessert luncheon.
Mah Jongg Party Is
Held at Parish Hall
Mrs. J. C. Filler was hostess
at a mah jongg party Friday
afternoon at the Trinity Episcopal Parish hall for benefit” of
Trinity Sunday school.
Mrs. Muriel Fletcher, Miss
Katie Eddy and Mrs. Betty Leiter won prizes while Mrs. Harriet
Farmer was awarded consolation prize. .

Mrs. Ida Magonigal
Returns From Boston
Mrs. Ida Magonigal returned
home Friday evening from a 17day trip that was highlighted by
the annual meeting of -the
Mother Church, First Church of
Christ Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
Mrs. Magonigal spent two days
sight-seeing New York City,
visited with friends in Washington, D. C., and stopped over in
Chicago before returning home
on the Overland Limited.

Eastern Star Will
Observe 76th Year
Evangeline Chapter No. 9,
Order of Eastern Star, will observe its 76th anniversary tonight at the regular meeting in
Masonic Hall. Geraldine Mooers, .
Worthy Matron, and Joseph Mason, Worthy Patron, will preside.
A program will be followed by
refreshments.
North San Juan Club
Holds Birthday Party
The Women’s Birthday club
met at Mrs. Sauers’ home
Wednesday.
Mrs. Colman and Mrs. Staton
were the only members having
their birthday in the month of
June.
Mrs. Colman received a very
beautiful pin and card from her
secret pal. Mrs. Staton being a
new member, has not had a
chance to have a secret pal as
yet.
Those present at this meeting
were: Mrs. Crowl, Mrs. Staton,
Mrs. Slankard, Mrs. McQuinn,
Lois McQuinn, Mrs. Ramsden,
Mrs. Sauers, Mrs. Madden, Mrs.
C. B. Browning, Mrs. Adele
Browning, Teresa O’Connor, Mrs.
Proon, Alice Kohler, Mrs.
Atchinson and Mrs. Colman.
Mrs. C. B, Browning won the
mystery package, which was a
very nice plastic apron.
Mrs. Crowl won two prizes.
One for a fishing game and the
other for guessing the names of
cities.
Mrs. Alice Kohler won a prize
in guessing game of states.
Lunch was served on the lawn
in front of Mrs. Sauers’ home,
where there was a very nice
breeze and everyone was comfortable.
Cold drinks were passed out
later in the afternoon.
The next meeting will be July
20, 1949 at Mrs. Alice ‘Kohler’s
home.
Asks Injunction On
Cutting of Timber
Floyd Gerhart filed in superior
court asking an injunction restrainng Steve Novack and others from cutting timber on land
leased by the defendant from the
plaintiff. Gerhart also asks $1,000
damages. John Larue, Nevada
City, is attorney for Gerhart.
In other actions filed yesterday
in superior court, Sam -and Margery Hendon vs. Theodore J.
Kohler, administrator of estate
of Mary Ellen King; and Alfred
H. and Edna Mae Wasley vs.
John J. Looser, administrator of
Edward Long estate, and Theodore J. Kohler, administrator of
Elizabeth Rowe estate, were
quiet title suits.
The Liberty Bell was cracked
while tolling a knell for Chief
Justice John Marshall in 1835.
