The town turned out en masse and searched nearly all night, calling and doing all they could to locate the wanderer, bit he was never found. THE SECOND TRAGEDY If it really was one, was the supposed death. of an old man. When a small girl’ the writer remembers her father saying “Don’t { a shortcake?,”’ and the generous helping I would have. I was always ready to go although it was quite 4 walk to the home of Mr. Fowler. He was a bachelor and lived on the south side of Sweetland Creek, but had a large strawberry patch on the north side of the creek, perhaps an acre, maybe more. With my father’s dinner. pail in hand and 25 cents to pay for the strawberries, I was soon on my gray. Arriving at the home of Mr. Fowler and making known my errand, we would cross the creek and I would watch him pick the berries. When he had nearly filled the pail, he would fill the little frame which held the little cup on the lid and would say, ‘‘These are for you’, and I would eat them on my way home. He was a kindly man and I think well liked in the community. His home was small, contained» two or three rooms, ‘Finally he married a widow marriage, he built a new home not far from the new home of J. S. Brown, and had quite a little farm there. Later, two children “were born to the couple, a girl. and a boy. He kept cows and tilled his little farm, and with the three children, her girl who was a very accomplished housekeeper, kept the home, while the wife who was a midwife and nurse, and helped to make or pérhaps made most of the living. As the ‘years: went by, she gave up her work as a nurse, her of their own,‘and' the father and mother and two children were the occupants of the home. Both parents were approaching what is called old age, her health not too good, his health failing, at least his’ mind. One’ afternoon in 1881 he left the house to look for’a cow which had failed to come home the night before, (the cows in the little town roamed at will over the hills there.) The old gentleman put some apples in his distance from his home he was sgen: by a neighbor’ following a diteh bank and travelling. to the east, with his dog as a Companion. The two men waved to each other, and that was the last seen of the old gentleman from that day to this. Shortly after his departure, the lost cow came home, nothing much was thought about it until toward evening, then his family gave the wold hogs foraged far to the east. allen prey to them. Tunnels and Shafts were investigated, but no trace of him was ever found. The town lamented with his family, the loss of a good man, one of its early citizens who apparently had come to an untimely death.
